How do I build an outdoor kitchen on a budget?
We built an outdoor kitchen using wood to save money on this outdoor kitchen project. We spent around $150 on supplies (not including tools and paint that we already had). We custom-built our outdoor kitchen shelf and cabinets to fit the exact measurements of the outdoor space.
Is it worth it to build an outdoor kitchen?
Yes! I’d build this kitchen again in another house. It was challenging to level the cabinet since our paver patio slopes away from the house, but other than that, it was a project for beginners.
How do you weatherproof an outdoor kitchen?
Using pressure-treated wood will weatherproof wood cabinets, however, I do not recommend using pressure-treated wood if you are using food on the finished cabinets.
Paint or stain the finished project in your desired color then add water-based polyurethane to protect it from elements. You may need a couple of coats of polyurethane, be sure to let it dry 12-24 hours between each coat.
What do you make an outdoor kitchen out of?
We used wood to build our outdoor kitchen. The counter is plywood, although, you can get fancy and add tile, granite, stainless steel, etc.
How To Build an Outdoor Kitchen
This outdoor kitchen cabinet design includes a space for our mini-fridge and one wall with support. If you do not have a mini-fridge or your kitchen will be free-standing, you will need to modify this design.
- Gather Supplies.
- Build the cabinet base with 2 x 4’s for the frame and plywood for the top.
- Build the cabinet legs to support the next shelf.
- Use 2 x 4’s to build the base of the shelf and plywood for the top of the frame. Build a similar frame with plywood for the side supporting piece around the mini-fridge.
- Attach 2 x 4’s to create the top shelf.
- Attach the side piece for the mini-fridge to the frame to connect the entire unit.
- Attach the countertop (ours is plywood). We also added a strip of plywood to the top back to cover the window.
- Paint the cabinet your desired color. I painted ours, Benjamin Moore Gray, for the base and off-the-shelf white for the countertop.
- Paint the entire cabinet with clear matte water-based polyurethane to protect the wood from outdoor elements.
