If your patio or balcony is on the small side, or if you just need to find ways to make the most of the space you do have, here are some ideas for doing just that.
We updated our back patio in December 2021 and extended the brick paver patio to the length of the house. The addition gave us more space to decorate our patio but the patio is still narrow.

What can I do with a small outdoor space?
What you do with a small outdoor space depends on your interests. Maybe you like to take naps in the afternoon, entertain your friends, or want a place to watch the wildlife. We use our small outdoor space for all of these things!
Here are some ideas to create an enjoyable small outdoor space:
- Add a small table to seat 4-6 people to create a place for entertaining and dining al fresco.
- Include lounge furniture to create a cozy environment.
- Add plants, a birdfeeder, and a birdbath for wildlife to enjoy.
See more in detail below!
How do you make a small patio private?
You can create a private patio by adding a privacy wall or tall plants surrounding the patio.
How do you create an outdoor welcoming space?
You can create a cozy outdoor space with lounge furniture, comfy pillows, and blankets. Comfortable seating is important when entertaining. I love visiting a home with rocking chairs or swivel chairs because they are relaxing. Oversized Adirondack chairs are also a great addition to make an outdoor space welcoming.
Outdoor Dining Table
Our outdoor dining table seats 6-8 people (4 small children can sit on the bench if needed) and is perfect for small patios. My husband built this table so it holds sentimental value as well. He used reclaimed wood from our fence posts when we replaced our fence.
Add some games like this fabric checkerboard set or playing cards to create a welcoming outdoor space.
Lounge Furniture
Include lounge furniture to create a cozy environment. Choose furniture that you can use to entertain multiple people or use as a cozy nap space. Sleeping outside on a breezy, beautiful day is the best feeling!
I love our outdoor seating! We’ve had it for several years and it has been in the elements (rain and sun) and still looks great. I replaced the cushions and pillows and it makes a big difference! These pillows are very comfortable! We can arrange the seating in several different ways (one long sofa, individual seating, etc).
Plants, Birdfeeders, Birdbaths
Adding plants, birdfeeders, and birdbaths for wildlife creates a welcoming backyard. I didn’t know how much we were missing until we added a bird feeder in our backyard. We’ve seen many different birds and squirrels since adding the bird feeder and it’s entertaining and brings us back to nature.
I also added some pollinating flowers in our garden to attract bees and butterflies. We see many beautiful butterflies and the bees help pollinate my vegetable garden.
I used a Dollar Tree plant saucer to create a quick birdbath in our garden by the pool. I’ve seen many birds in this saucer and squirrels drink the water too!. I added a solar-powered fountain to add a relaxing waterfall sound to our small patio.

Hide Toys Under Patio Furniture
One of the reasons why I love our outdoor lounge furniture is because I can hide things under it and you would never know! I hide small pool toys, pool goggles, and large outdoor toys (my son’s trucks!).
Use Command Hooks to Hang Plants or Lights
Command hooks are great to hand a wreath, lights, and plants. Make sure to choose the correct weight-supported hooks if you are hanging heavy plants.
Fake Plants are Okay
I had some fake plants in my craft bin (to use for wreath-making) and I stuck them in a flower box to create quick windowbox florals. You would never know these are fake plants from a distance and the greenery really adds to the space!
Real plants are better of course, but I have many real plants inside and outside of our home, and having one less plant to water was helpful.
