🧑🍳 Step 1: Build an Outdoor Kitchen on a Budget (With IKEA GRILLSKÄR)
IKEA’s GRILLSKÄR collection makes building a custom outdoor kitchen so easy and affordable. Our setup is compact but super functional. The kitchen island is from IKEA (not affiliate-linked), but I found some similar options for you!
🧊 What we used:
- Kitchen Island Shelf Unit (under the window)
- Outdoor mini fridge (fits between next to a cabinet)
- Shelf with Doors for hidden storage
🎯 Pro tip: The 76-inch wall under our window was the perfect spot to line everything up. We styled it with a few potted herbs and a wooden cutting board. It looks high-end, but it’s totally IKEA (and easy to install!).
🍽️ Step 2: Refresh Your Patio with Seating + Dollar Store Style
Next up: the patio! We swapped out our bulky furniture for a simple round table and lightweight chairs—perfect for morning coffee or evening grilling.
- 💡 Simple upgrades that made a big difference:
- Add a neutral outdoor rug to define the space (or in our case, a defined patio space).
- Centered a white ceramic pot with fresh succulents from Dollar Tree
- Layered placemats, battery-operated candles, and napkins for a pulled-together look
🪑 Tip: Don’t underestimate the Dollar Store! Their plastic tableware, outdoor-safe trays, and faux greenery are surprisingly cute and perfect for seasonal setups.

✨ Step 3: Hang Ambience-Boosting Lights
Nothing says outdoor oasis like twinkle lights!
We strung café-style globe lights across our patio and hooked them to the side of the house and the shed. It instantly made the space feel more magical and perfect for summer nights.
💡 Other lighting ideas:
- Dollar Tree solar lanterns lining the path
- Clip-on umbrella lights for late dinners
- Mason jar lights with fairy string lights inside

🌬️ Step 4: Create Privacy with a DIY Macramé Divider
One of my favorite features? The macramé hanging I scored at a thrift store! I hung it on our arbor to block the view of our trash area during a backyard party—and it was a hit!
🧵 Since the original piece isn’t outdoor safe, I took it down after the event, but now I’m planning to recreate a weatherproof version with macramé cord.
🏡 Alternative ideas:
- Use outdoor-safe curtains with tension rods
- Hang lattice panels and add faux vines from Dollar Tree
- Try bamboo fencing for a more tropical look

✅ Final Tips for Your Own Outdoor Oasis
- Start with zones: cooking, dining, relaxing, and hiding eyesores
- Stick to a palette: navy + white, black + wood tones, or soft greige
- Mix materials: metal from IKEA + natural textures from Dollar finds
- Personalize: layer in your style with planters, signs, and seasonal pillows
