Dollar Tree Backyard Makeover Ideas That Look Expensive (Easy DIY Patio Decor)

I didn’t want to spend thousands updating our backyard… but I did want it to feel like one of those cozy, high-end patios you see on Pinterest.

So I challenged myself to use what I already had, mix in a few Dollar Tree finds, and create a space that actually felt put together.

And honestly… I’m shocked at how good it turned out.

Everything you see here is:
✔ Budget-friendly
✔ Beginner-friendly
✔ Mostly Dollar Tree or thrifted
✔ And ALL no-sew

Let me show you exactly how I did it 👇

Our Backyard Story

This backyard did NOT happen overnight.

What started as a plain backyard slowly became one of my favorite spaces at our house — but it took years of projects, saving, DIYing, sanding, painting, and LOTS of trial and error.

Some of the projects were major investments:

  • removing a huge tree
  • digging out roots
  • leveling the yard
  • redoing the pool deck
  • adding pavers
  • building patio roofs
  • installing ceiling fans
  • landscaping with tropical plants

But honestly?

A lot of the “high-end” look came from the SMALL details.

And many of those details came from Dollar Tree, thrift stores, and DIYing!

I think sometimes people assume beautiful outdoor spaces happen instantly… but ours has evolved little by little over several years.

The Big Backyard Upgrades

Paver Patio + Pool Deck

One of the biggest transformations was updating the ground surfaces.

The pavers instantly made everything feel cleaner and more upscale.

Tropical Landscaping

The tropical plants completely changed the vibe of the backyard.

They made the space feel:

  • more private
  • more relaxing
  • more resort-inspired

Patio Roofs + Ceiling Fans

Adding covered patio areas made the backyard usable year-round here in Florida.

The ceiling fans made SUCH a difference in the heat.

Outdoor Kitchen Updates

1. No-Sew Outdoor Pillows (Dollar Tree Shower Curtains)

These made the biggest difference in making the space feel finished and cozy.

What I used:

  • Dollar Tree shower curtains ($5+ section)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pillow inserts or stuffing

How to make them:

  1. Cut the shower curtain to your desired pillow size
  2. Fold edges inward
  3. Hot glue sides together (leave one side open)
  4. Insert pillow or stuffing
  5. Glue the final edge closed

Tip: These are water-resistant and have held up great outdoors so far!

2. DIY Outdoor Lanterns (Dollar Tree Basket Hack)

This is one of my favorite budget projects because it looks way more expensive than it is.

What I used:

  • Dollar Tree plastic basket
  • Recycled container (protein tub)
  • Solar light or LED candle
  • Spray paint (matte tan or brown)

How to make them:

  1. Wrap the basket around your container
  2. Secure with hot glue
  3. Spray paint for a wood or rattan look
  4. Add optional bead or twine detail
  5. Place light inside

Tip: A matte finish + light dry brushing makes these look more high-end. See the Full Tutorial here.

3. Faux Concrete Flower Pots (Also Double as Tables)

These instantly upgraded my space and made everything feel more modern and high-end.

What I used:

  • Plastic flower pots
  • Paint
  • Baking soda
  • Spray Paint

How to make them:

  1. Spray paint plastic pots to give it a surface the baking soda & paint mixture can stick to.
  2. Mix paint with baking soda
  3. Apply using a dabbing motion (not smooth strokes)
  4. Let dry completely

4. No-Sew Outdoor Cushion (Thrifted Tablecloth Hack)

This is such an easy way to upgrade seating without sewing.

What I used:

  • Old foam cushion
  • Thrifted tablecloth
  • Hot glue

How to make it:

  1. Wrap the foam like a present
  2. Fold corners neatly
  3. Glue underneath to secure

5. Turn One Pillow into Two Lumbar Pillows

This is one of the easiest ways to stretch your budget.

How to do it:

  1. Cut a large pillow in half
  2. Fold edges inward
  3. Hot glue the seam closed

You just turned one pillow into two custom lumbar pillows!

6. Outdoor Curtains for a Cozy Patio Feel

This is what made the biggest visual difference in creating a cozy outdoor “room.”

These curtains completely softened the space and made it feel like an outdoor resort cabana.

I partnered with TwoPages to feature their outdoor curtains in this backyard refresh, and I genuinely love how much they elevated the patio space.

What to look for:

  • Lightweight curtain panels (like these from TwoPages Curtains)
  • Neutral tones
  • Grommet tops for easy hanging

Tip: Curtains instantly make a patio feel more finished and high-end.

7. Hanging Plant Wall

This added height and made the space feel styled instead of flat.

What I used:

  • Planters
  • Wall hooks
  • Greenery

How to create it:

  1. Install Dollar Tree laundry basket scraps evenly spaced (See the Full Tutorial here)
  2. Hang planters
  3. Add plants or faux greenery

8. Using Indoor Pillow Covers Outdoors

I found pillowcases (2 for $1.50!) and tested them outside—and they’ve held up great so far.

👉 This is also a great business idea:

  • Use your Cricut to personalize them
  • Sell on Etsy
  • Turn $1.50 into $15–$25+

9. Deck Box Setup (Storage + Seating)

I styled my deck box to double as a bench, which made the space more functional.

👉 Watch how I set it up here:

Why it works:

  • Hidden storage
  • Extra seating
  • Looks intentional when styled with cushions

More Details About Our Backyard Refresh

Walmart Wood Lounge Chairs

These were SUCH a good find.

The wood tone warmed up the backyard and balanced all the black accents. Get the Walmart lounge chairs here.

Faux Concrete Round Table

I actually DIYed this table YEARS ago and still use it today.

That’s one thing I love about outdoor DIY projects:
when you make timeless choices, they can last through multiple backyard refreshes. Find the full tutorial here.

Restaining the Outdoor Furniture

We’ve had the wood chairs and sofa for FOUR years now.

This year I sanded everything down and restained it to bring it back to life instead of replacing it.

And honestly?
I’m so glad I did.

The Dollar Tree DIYs That Pulled Everything Together

This is where the laundry basket DIYs came in.

I used them throughout the backyard for:

  • lanterns
  • plant stands
  • wall decor
  • trays
  • candle accents
  • hanging greenery

Repeating the same shapes and finishes throughout the space made everything feel cohesive and intentional.

See the tutorials here.

Outdoor Floor Pouf Idea

I also want to make oversized outdoor floor poufs for this space because I think they’d:

  • add extra seating
  • soften the patio
  • make the lounge area feel even cozier

This could become a future DIY tutorial!

Backyard Styling Tips

How to Make a Backyard Look High-End

  • Repeat colors and materials
  • Mix DIYs with investment pieces
  • Layer lighting
  • Use greenery everywhere
  • Add soft textures
  • Create conversation areas
  • Don’t rush the process

Final Thoughts

This backyard has truly been a labor of love.

Some parts took major investments and years of planning… and other parts were created with Dollar Tree finds, thrift store decor, old cushions, spray paint, and DIY projects made one weekend at a time.

And honestly? I think that mix is what made the space feel the most personal.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned throughout this backyard refresh is that creating a beautiful outdoor space isn’t about buying everything brand new all at once. It’s about layering pieces over time, mixing high and low, reusing what you already have, and finding creative ways to make your home feel cozy and inviting for your family.

From the laundry basket DIYs and shower curtain cushion covers to the outdoor curtains, tropical plants, and restored furniture, every little project helped pull the entire backyard together into a space we genuinely love spending time in.

I still have more projects I want to tackle (including those outdoor floor poufs 😂), but seeing how far this backyard has come from the before photos makes me SO grateful we kept going little by little instead of trying to do everything perfectly all at once.

If you’re currently working on your own backyard refresh, I hope this inspires you to start with what you have and create a space that feels good for your family — even if it happens one DIY at a time.

And if you missed Part 1 of this series, make sure to check out my Dollar Tree Laundry Basket DIYs post where I share all the budget-friendly decor projects that helped make this backyard feel high-end without the high-end price tag.
