Backyard Landscaping Design on a Budget
We’ve completed a lot of upgrades to our backyard over the last 5 years including:
- Leveling the yard
- Pool pavers
- Patio Addition
- Patio roof addition
- Outdoor kitchen addition
- Outdoor kitchen roof addition
- Adding a Pergola
- Adding a Shed
- Planting various flowers, trees, and plants
- Mulching areas
- Adding gutters
Phew! That was a lot we’d already had completed so I was curious what Yardzen would come up with and if they would change anything with our current design.
BEFORE YARDZEN
The Yardzen design has an improved outdoor kitchen area, functional/modern furniture, a wood accent on the house, and a traditional seating area. I loved everything about this design and planned to start implementing it as much as I can WITHOUT a contractor.
YARDZEN DESIGN PHOTOS
The biggest redesign of our backyard was the DIY concrete patio. We had our pool remodeled in 2020 so that was in great condition. Inspired by modern design trends, we decided NOT to take on the challenge of pouring the patio ourselves. We hired a local contractor that specializes in concrete (he ONLY does concrete jobs). He was able to complete the concrete patio in a few days. The sense of accomplishment from this DIY project was immense, and it added a personal touch to our backyard that we truly cherished.
Concrete Pavers with Grass in Between
After the concrete pavers were set, I purchased some fake grass as Lowes (you can find fake grass here) and cut strips to fit in between each paver. I used leveling sand to fill in the space and then placed the grass on top of the leveling sand. I purchased landscaping staples but never installed them and after a year, the grass strips have not moved (even through 70-mile-per-hour hurricane winds!). However, I will probably end up stapling them down.

To complement the clean lines of the concrete patio, we chose modern furniture that exudes comfort and style. Sleek lounge chairs, an outdoor sofa, and a minimalist dining set create inviting areas for relaxation and entertainment. The addition of a fire pit by the poolside brings warmth and ambiance, extending the usability of our outdoor space into the cooler evenings. It’s become our favorite spot to gather with friends and family, sharing stories under the stars.
