DIY Home Projects Ideas for 2023
I’m thinking ahead and planning our home projects for 2023 in this post. What kind of projects are you planning? Some ideas could include painting interior walls, adding landscaping features, remodeling a kitchen or bathroom, or even installing a pool. Whatever projects you have in mind, I’m sure they’ll make your home look great! Keep reading to see our plans for Home Improvement Projects in 2023!
Planning Home Projects by Month
I’m hoping to achieve all of these home improvement projects by month. I divided each room and spaced out the projects so I can focus on that room during that month. I plan to work on each specific room during that month and post the results as soon as possible.
January – Family Room Refresh
We already started to refresh the family room by replacing the furniture in the room. We added a new sectional and I found a credenza on FB Marketplace that I’m flipping. I’m excited to see how it turns out and to meet my goal by the end of January, although I might not share the results until February.
I’d like to get a new rug and maybe change out the curtains but everything looks so good with the new sectional that I may not need to!
2/07/23 UPDATE: We completed the Family Room Refresh with the completion of the Credenza Makeover and you can find all the tutorials on simplemadepretty.com!

February – Garage UpdateÂ
I’ve been dreaming about cleaning up our garage for the past couple of years. I’d love to declutter, organize things, paint the walls, and epoxy the floors. I plan to powerwash the floors first to see if epoxy is necessary but I don’t think the garage floors have ever been clean since this house was built 40 years ago, lol.

March – Shed and Outdoor Updates
March is a great time to work outside and really SPRING CLEAN. After we clean out the garage, most of those items are probably going to find their way to the shed so they will need to be decluttered. My husband’s power tools have taken over the shed and I’d love to organize everything and turn the shed into a workshop. That said, We’ll need to find a place for gardening items and might have to build a separate garden shed.
Every Spring I touch up the paint outside of the house because our house is white and last Summer we had to board the windows due to Hurricane Ian so there are holes we filled and need to be painted over.
I redesigned our side yard garden area and would like to plant palm trees along the fence with black mulch. We have crushed shell there currently and I’ll have to dig most of that out. I’d love to add 2 arbors with climbing flowers in the garden entrance and exit. I plan to plant new herbs and veggies in the garden too and pressure wash the fence.
I’d love to build or install an outdoor shower area before Summer so this is on our to-do list, but it might get pushed back to the end of Summer.
April – Kitchen and Eat-in Kitchen Refresh
Our Banquette and Eat-in kitchen seems a little dated with the shiplap wallpaper, so I’d like to redo the walls with another wallpaper, paint, or stencil. I’d love to replace the chairs, although comfortable, I’d like something more functional with kids… high-quality wood chairs that are easy to clean.
I’ve been dying to add drawers to our blind cabinets in the Kitchen. We replaced our kitchen cabinet drawer boxes last Summer and we kept the old drawer boxes to use in the blind cabinets (another thing taking up storage in the shed, lol).
I’m also considering painting the tile floors a checkered pattern and replacing the baseboards in the banquette.

I’d love to replace or paint the bar stools. Our current bar stools are vintage bamboo and we love them! However, they creak when someone swivels in them and I always wished they were a lighter, natural wood color. Since the bar stools flow into the family room, I might paint them as part of the family room decor refresh!
May – Girl’s Bedroom Refresh
My daughter has asked to refresh her bedroom again. I don’t think I ever posted a picture or post of her bedroom when we redid it in 2021, lol.
She is requesting a new headboard (which I might DIY), new curtains, and to paint the walls a green color or use a wallpaper/stencil.
June – Den/Home Office
I’d love to add privacy on the Kitchen door that separates the Den/Office and stencil the wall with pretty floral colors, paint the trim, and replace the sofa and ottoman cover.
DEN BEFORE (Summer 2021)
In the office, I’d like to update the window blinds (blackout or motorized blinds), replace the marble window ledge (because it’s cracked), and possibly replace the ceiling light fixture (which is currently a fan but I’d like something better for working over the craft table).
July – Primary Bedroom Refresh
I’ve never been able to get the artwork the way I like it in our Primary bedroom so I’d like to create a gallery wall, get new blinds (blackout with top-down/button-up function), and add wood shelves in the closet.
PRIMARY (Summer 2021)
August – Boy’s Bedroom Updates
My son has also requested to refresh his bedroom but he’d like to just move his furniture around. We might take care of this before August 🙂
September – Laundry Room Remodel
I’d love to replace the upper cabinets in the laundry room and add space to house our vacuum cleaner and mop. Since we lack closet space, there really isn’t a space to hide the vacuum! We updated the laundry room in 2019 and it currently has a farmhouse style I’d like to make it look modern with cabinets that extend to the ceiling.
October
I don’t have anything planned for October, which is great but I’m sure something will come up so I’m leaving the month of October to complete unfinished projects 🙂
November & December
Since the holidays are typically so busy, I don’t plan to do any home improvement projects during November and December. We also have Christmas decorations around the house, including a Christmas tree, so it’s hard to work on the house with all those decorations in the way.
Painting and Flooring
I don’t have painting divided by months because I’ll most likely paint each room listed above during the refresh and update. I’d love to get new floors in our home but it’s still up in the air if that will happen and I’m content with the floors until we’re able to do that DIY.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal
Removing the popcorn ceiling is on my wishlist along with new floors. Both are huge projects but removing the popcorn ceiling is on our to-do list someday.
Wrap Up About DIY Home Project Planning for 2023
I feel good about this list of the DIY home projects we’d like to complete in 2023. If you are planning to do any home projects this year, I highly encourage you to make a list like this and plan out the projects. We might not do all of these projects but that’s okay. I might add another project as well since I work with sponsors. Having put together this plan will make the projects easier to achieve and I can’t wait to see what new updates 2023 brings.
