Laundry Room + Entryway Makeover – The Story Behind This Room Transformation
My in-laws recently purchased a new home and wanted to redo the inside before moving in. The house came fully furnished with the previous owner’s belongings. It was someone’s winter vacation home and they just left everything when they sold it. Needless to say, there was a lot of decluttering and cleaning to be done.
The laundry room also serves as the main entrance to the house and I wanted it to be inviting, functional, and pretty. I created a space that can be used as a laundry room and a functional entryway.
The entryway table doubles as an entryway storage table and a laundry room folding table! I came up with a glam beach theme that will surprise guests that enter the house and create a lasting first impression. This is one laundry room where you’ll want to spend more time!
I was able to keep this Laundry Room Remodel under an extreme budget with many of the decorations being DIY projects or repurposed items from around the house.
Cheap Laundry Room Makeover
BEFORE
AFTER
Paint Colors
We started this laundry room makeover by removing everything from the room, cleaning, and painting. I painted the wall with the machines in Sherwin Williams Sea Salt, which is a greenish-bluish beachy color. The other walls and trim were painted Benjamin Moore Simply White (which is one of my favorite white paint colors). I painted the exterior metal door as well in an off-the-shelf white.
Floor & Antifatigue Mats
I left the floors alone since they were in good shape and I knew I’d add a rug. I found some antifatigue mats at my local Ross store which are perfect for no-slip entryways and standing for long periods of time folding laundry.
DIY Entryway Table (Bonus Laundry Room Folding Table)
Since this laundry room also serves as the main entryway to the home, I wanted to create a welcoming space. My hubby helped me build this entryway table which also serves as a laundry folding table!
I removed the ugly metal shelf unit and replaced it with 2 smaller shelves and a tabletop to create a DIY entry table and clothes folding table.
We had 2 mismatching bookcases that I repurposed by painting, cutting the legs down on one, and attaching a top and sides to create this custom table.
I stained the top in Golden Oak wood stain with an oil-based polyurethane for easy cleanup. My mother-in-law had this vintage beach painting that matched the room perfectly!
We ended up cutting out the backs of the bookcases on the bottom shelf so these huge laundry baskets could fit on the bottom of each side. These tubs from Ikea have many uses and are perfect to sort laundry!
Lighting and Electrical Updates
We replaced the old light bulb fixture in the ceiling with a glamorous crystal chandelier. You might notice the electrical outlet above the entry table. There was an electrical outlet behind the table so we moved it where my mother-in-law can easily access it to iron clothing.
Peel and Stick Tile Wall
This peel-and-stick wall tile came out better than I expected. I found these peel-and-stick tiles on the shelf when cleaning out this room and I had just enough tiles to do the wall behind the machines. The tile colors matched perfectly with the paint and hardware… it really felt like they were meant to be!
I added a few extra cut-out diamonds to create a real tile look on the wall behind the washing machines.
Thrift Store Finds
I found several items featured in this laundry room at my local thrift stores. The silver mirror was $3 and the memo board was gifted to my mother-in-law for free at her favorite thrift store! The mostly wine bag is an old bag from my stash.
DIY Utility Sink Wrap Around Cabinet
This is a DIY decor hack that I hope others try! I had the hubby help me build a fake cabinet for the utility sink. I wanted them to be able to still access the plumbing underneath but wanted to upgrade the sink without spending more money.
We used scrap plywood and attached 3 pieces together around the lip of the sink. The entire piece can slide right out if anyone needs to get to the pipes underneath.
I painted the plywood in white to match the upper cabinets and it looked built-in!
Laundry Room Upper Cabinets
I found these upper cabinets for 50% off at a local Home Depot reseller (Your Home Discount Warehouse in Clearwater, FL). We attached them to the wall before I added the peel-and-stick tile. I added a tension rod in the center which serves as an extra clothes drying line.
Wrap Up About this Laundry Room Remodel Before and After
In conclusion, this laundry room remodel project has been a success. By incorporating new furniture, decor, and paint, the space has been transformed into an inviting area that can be enjoyed year-round. The addition of an entryway table with storage, upper cabinets, and wall hooks has made the room both beautiful and practical. Overall, this entryway laundry room remodel has brought new life to this home that my in-laws will enjoy for years to come.
