Credenza Makeover DIY Project
I found this amazing credenza on Facebook Marketplace for under $40. It was in great condition and the color was lovely, however, I preferred something more modern with light wood tones. I ended up painting the credenza, creating a wood look, and adding hardware with lined drawers. It turned out beautiful so I’m sharing the process with you! How to Update a Credenza
I’m happy to provide you with a tutorial on how to give your credenza a makeover using furniture from the Facebook Marketplace. Here are some steps to get you started:
- Search for a credenza. The Facebook Marketplace has a variety of used furniture available, so take the time to look around and find the perfect credenza for your makeover.
- Once you have the credenza, it’s time to start the makeover process. You can repaint the piece using high-quality paint, sand it down to give it a distressed look, or add a new coat of polyurethane to give it a glossy finish.
- Add accents such as knobs and pulls to give the credenza a unique look. Or, you can add decorative pieces like mirror tiles, wallpaper, or decals to the front of the piece to give it a custom touch.
- Finally, accessorize the piece with items that fit your style. Books, vases, and other home decor pieces are great ideas!
Lined Drawers in a Credenza
The finishing touch for this credenza makeover was the drawer lining. I used a pretty geometric printed peel-and-stick wallpaper. The drawers didn’t need to be lined but they look so much better. Plus, this gold pattern wallpaper was under $6 for the roll!
Adding Gold Drawer Pulls to the Credenza
I added these flat, modern drawer pulls to make the doors and drawers easier to open. The gold color was too yellow for my taste so I spray painted them to match the rest of the gold in our family room. I spray-painted the picture frame gallery wall above the credenza with the same gold spray paint so now everything matches.
How To Paint Furniture to Look Like Wood
Although I did use a paint kit to make this credenza look like a lighter shade of wood, I didn’t like the way it turned out so I ended up painting over it with paint from my craft room and blending the colors until I achieved the color I wanted. I really wanted this credenza to match the wood tone in our fireplace mantle (which is stained golden oak).
To get the paint to look like wood, I mixed the paint colors in a small cup until it was the color I wanted. Then I brushed the paint on the surface and used a dry paper towel to blend the colors. That’s it! The brush strokes resemble wood grain and the different layers of paint blended together make it look like real wood.
Organizing a Credenza or Media Center
I organized all of our board games and DVDs in the credenza using clear acrylic bins and plastic mesh bags. I recycled the board game boxes and placed everything in the mesh bags to get the most storage. You may have seen others using these mesh bags for the same purpose and I decided to give it a try. I’m very happy with the results!
