DIY Tree Swing Ideas
We had a DIY tree swing in the front yard at our last house and I have many pictures/memories of our kids playing on that swing. I always wanted to add a swing in this yard but we are limited on “good branches.” It took all day to get the tree swing knot tied on the only (tall) branch that would work but it was worth it to see how much our kids are enjoying it. 😁 Keep reading and watch the video to see How to Make a Tree Swing!
“Enjoy the little things for one day. You may look back and realize they were the big things.” ❤️⠀
In this tutorial, I share how to make a rope swing and tie a tree swing knot. This swing is tied to a branch that is strong enough to support a diy tree swing for adults. The rope is also very good quality to support adult weight.
How do you make a homemade tree swing?
We used a piece of wood, rope, and twine to make our tree swing. We repurposed a piece of thick pine that we used as a farmhouse shelf previously.
How do you make an old-fashioned tree swing?
Our swing reminds me of the swing from forest gump so I consider this style tree swing to be old fashioned. Keep reading to see how to make an old-fashioned tree swing! (Image source)

How do you attach a swing to a tree?
We made our attached our swing to a tree branch by trying some durable rope around the branch. The branch we used was the only good branch on our front yard tree and it was very high up!
My husband said he lasso’d the branch and pulled down tight on the rope. I don’t think we will ever take the swing down because it’s so high!
What is the best rope to use for a tree swing?

It gets good reviews on Amazon and it’s really good quality rope to sustain outdoor elements for years to come!
How to Hang a Swing from a Tree
Watch the video below for more tips to hang a swing from a tree!
Supplies:
- Rope
- Drill
- 1-inch Arbored Hole Saw
- Scrap Wood or 2×8 inch pine
- Twine
Directions:
- Gather supplies listed above.
- Prepare and cut the wood if needed. Ours was already cut and stained since we used it as a shelf inside our home. Our wood seat is sized 2 feet in length.
- Use a drill fitted with a 1-inch Arbored Hole Saw to drill holes in each corner of the wood.
- Tie the wood around the branch you plan to use. A few things to look for when choosing a branch to hange your tree swing: one that will not flex is someone hangs from it, at least 8-10 inches diameter. The branch we used hangs over our roof but it’s a very sturdy branch…just be cautious and test it out once you have the rope around it. Our rope/swing can supportadults weighing 160-225 lbs no problem.
- Attach the wood seat to the rope tied around the branch and tie a slip knot to connect the rope ends.
- We used twine wrapped around the rope to secure the ends. It’s very tedious to wrap the twine around and you want good quality twine that won’t break or tear from being wet (otherwise you’ll find yourself doing twine often!).
I added a message to the wood on our tree swing using my Cricut Machine, a Scorch Marker, and a heat gun. You can watch the time-lapse video below to see how to DIY the swing and add the wood burned message 🙂

How to pick the right paint colors
Have you ever had trouble picking the right paint colors for your home? Choosing the right paint colors for your home can be overwhelming. There are so many different “whites” and “grays” these days, how can anyone know they are making the right paint color choice?
That’s why I put together the best tips on How to Choose Interior Paint Colors in this post.
Every home is different… the entryway in our first home was much different than the entryway in our second home, and both of those were very different from the entryway in our third home! So I chose a different paint color for each entryway in all three of our homes. Not to mention, from the time that we bought our first home, to the time that we bought our third home, home paint color trends changed drastically. The colors that I used back then are no longer a trendy color and well, I just didn’t like the brown-ish tan that was in our first home, haha.
So if you need help choosing paint colors for the rest of your home, head on over to this post to see my paint-picking tips and what has worked for me in all three of our homes 🙂 My post with how to choose paint colors for your home is one of my most popular posts and readers have benefited from reading it before heading to the store to buy paint that ends up not working out.
I also have some ideas for choosing paint color combinations for bedrooms (with themes!)
Paint Versus Peel & Stick Wallpaper
Peel and stick wallpaper has become very popular recently since not everyone has access to tools to build their own Shiplap walls (thanks Chip and Joanna) or wants to tile an entire wall with subway tile. I love tiling but if I could slap up some wallpaper and call it a day, that would make me, the hubby, and my wallet happy!
You can find peel and stick wallpaper online at Target, Amazon, Home Depot, and more! I’ve linked my favorite peel and stick wallpaper and the ones I’ve used personally below.
