No-Sew Pillow Covers
The latest trends on HGTV and in-home decor stores are the use of woven pillows and boho throw pillows. Many of these bohemian pillows are made with heavy woven fabrics, like rugs, and cost $30 or more. So when I found some cheap boho-style rugs, I knew I could make some No-Sew Rug Pillows using my favorite Surebonder glue gun. Keep reading and watch the video to learn how to make no-sew rug pillows!
If you’re curious (or in a hurry)…
It’s an excellent brand glue gun and yet, you’ll also find that it is one of the cheapest options you’ll find online.
No-Sew DIY Pillows
In this tutorial, I’m sharing 2 different Rug Pillow DIY ideas…
- Rug Pillow Cover using an Old Pillow Cover
- Envelope Lumbar Rug Pillow
I’m using my favorite glue guns from Surebonder in this tutorial.
For the Envelope Lumbar Rug Pillow:
I used 2 scatter rugs found at my local Five Below store and stuffed them with extra linens (towels, blankets, etc).
The first glue gun I use is a mini cordless glue gun with a detailed tip and clear hot glue stick.
The second glue gun I use is a full-size glue gun and Surebonder’s Tough hot glue stick.
For the Rug Pillow Cover:
I used 1 scatter rug found at my local Five Below store with an old pillow cover and insert from Ikea.
I use a fabric hot glue stick from Surebonder with the cordless mini glue gun so the initial application of glue doesn’t show on the fabric seam.
You don’t want globs of glue showing… you want it to look like you sewed the fabric and that’s exactly what the Surebonder fabric glue and the detailed tip glue gun do for this project.

Let’s get started so you can see how easy and affordable it is to make these popular boho rug pillows!
DIY Tutorial to Make No-Sew Rug Pillows
If you want to learn how to make cheap bohemian pillows with a no-sew method, make sure to follow my tips below! I use a detailed tip glue gun to achieve these no-sew rug pillow covers and I include glue gun tips after the tutorial.
Supplies:
- Cordless Mini Glue Gun
- Fabric Hot Glue Sticks
- Full-Size Glue Gun
- Tough Stik Hot Glue Stick
- (1-3) Scatter Rug (mine are 20″ x 32″)
- (1-3) Throw Pillow Inserts (or use blankets, extra linens, etc)
- (1) old Throw Pillow Cover (mine is from Ikea for$2)
- Scissors
- Finger Protectors (to prevent glue gun burns on fingertips)
Directions:
- Gather Supplies. I highly recommend using finger protectors when using a hot glue gun.
- Cut one of the rugs in half.
- Open the other rug on a table surface with the right side facing up.
- Place the 2 cut rug pieces on the rug with the cut side facing out and the right side facing down.
- Use the detailed glue gun with the clear hot glue stick to glue the right side together.
- Add a second layer of hot glue using the full-size glue gun and the tough stick hot glue.
- Repeat for the left side of the rug.
- Turn the rug so you can glue the remaining sides. Adjust the rug to make sure the envelope opening is accessible before gluing.
- Glue the remainder sides using the same technique (detailed clear glue then full-size tough stick glue), leaving the envelope opening.
- Once the glue has cooled, flip the pillow cover right-side out.
- Stuff the pillow with your desired pillow insert (I used extra blankets, towels, etc. which make it extra slouchy).
- Enjoy your new no-sew rug pillow!
The Rug Pillow Covers ended up costing $5.00 each to make one and the Envelope Rug Pillows cost $10, so they are really affordable to DIY 🙂
And I also made some boho flour poufs below using the same rugs and my Surebonder Cordless Mini Glue Gun. I stuffed the “rug pillow” with some towels and old throw pillows that I had sitting around the house. Don’t they look beautiful?

A Note About Using High-Temperature Glue Guns
High-temperature glue guns should be used with caution and children should not use high-temperature glue guns.
I highly recommend wearing finger protectors when using glue guns to protect your fingers from burns. Do not use your hands to hold glued items together or you could sustain burns on your hands as well.
A detailed tip on a glue gun makes application easier and in my opinion, might reduce the chance for burns.

How to pick the right paint colors
Have you ever had trouble picking the right paint colors for your home? Choosing the right paint colors for your home can be overwhelming. There are so many different “whites” and “grays” these days, how can anyone know they are making the right paint color choice?
That’s why I put together the best tips on How to Choose Interior Paint Colors in this post.
Every home is different… the entryway in our first home was much different than the entryway in our second home, and both of those were very different from the entryway in our third home! So I chose a different paint color for each entryway in all three of our homes. Not to mention, from the time that we bought our first home, to the time that we bought our third home, home paint color trends changed drastically. The colors that I used back then are no longer a trendy color and well, I just didn’t like the brown-ish tan that was in our first home, haha.
So if you need help choosing paint colors for the rest of your home, head on over to this post to see my paint-picking tips and what has worked for me in all three of our homes 🙂 My post with how to choose paint colors for your home is one of my most popular posts and readers have benefited from reading it before heading to the store to buy paint that ends up not working out.
I also have some ideas for choosing paint color combinations for bedrooms (with themes!)
Paint Versus Peel & Stick Wallpaper
Peel and stick wallpaper has become very popular recently since not everyone has access to tools to build their own Shiplap walls (thanks Chip and Joanna) or wants to tile an entire wall with subway tile. I love tiling but if I could slap up some wallpaper and call it a day, that would make me, the hubby, and my wallet happy!
You can find peel and stick wallpaper online at Target, Amazon, Home Depot, and more! I’ve linked my favorite peel and stick wallpaper and the ones I’ve used personally below.
