Our home has gone through so many updates, but our front yard curb appeal makeover is the most dramatic transformation yet — completely changing the way our home looks and feels from the street. I’m excited to share the full before-and-after, plus how we updated everything from the windows and front door to our landscaping and seating area — and how a few DIY projects made a huge difference without a massive budget. Before: 1980s Original (And It Showed)
When we moved in, our home’s front exterior had a lot of what I would call… “original charm.”
Our front door was straight out of the 1980s — dark, worn, and dated. The windows were single-pane black frames that didn’t offer much insulation (or curb appeal). The landscaping was basic, with white rock that felt a little too stark against the house.
I knew we had the potential to create something fresh, inviting, and more us — it just needed a little vision (and a lot of DIY elbow grease!).
Major Updates We Made
1. New Hurricane Impact Windows and Front Door
We replaced all the old black, single-pane windows with white hurricane impact windows. While black windows have been trendy for a while, we wanted something lighter, classic, and better suited for our home’s style and Florida climate. Bonus: Now our house is better protected from storms and much more energy-efficient!
For the front door, we chose a beautiful fiberglass wood-grain door — a major upgrade from the outdated 1980s door. I personally stained the new door to give it a rich, natural look while keeping it low-maintenance and durable.
We also installed a new Lockly Vision Elite keypad door lock that features fingerprint access and a built-in camera! It’s been such a game-changer for security and convenience — no more digging for keys when my hands are full!
2. DIY Jasmine Trellis Wall
One of my favorite DIY additions was creating a jasmine trellis wall along our stucco front wall. We installed simple hooks and sturdy wire directly into the stucco to guide the jasmine vines as they grow. It’s an affordable, easy way to add greenery, privacy, and a beautiful scent to the front yard!

3. New Landscaping + Seating Area
We replaced the old white rock with a softer, gray stone for a more modern and cohesive look with the house color and new windows. We also carved out a cozy seating area in the front yard, adding a couple of Adirondack chairs. Now it feels like an actual “outdoor room” where we can relax and enjoy the neighborhood!
4. Design Inspiration: Our Yardzen Plan

5. DIY Front Porch Patio Makeover

Final Thoughts
This front yard makeover wasn’t about a full gut renovation — it was about smart, impactful updates that brought new life to our home’s exterior. Between the hurricane windows, new door, beautiful jasmine trellis, fresh landscaping, and cozy seating, it finally feels like the welcoming front yard we dreamed of.
