Laundry Room Makeover

Whenever I look back at the pictures of our house when we bought it, I still can’t believe the changes that we made in such a short time. We were able to update our laundry room over 2 years by completing each laundry room update in phases. You’ll see how each phase made a mig impact to create the laundry room you see today. Keep reading to see how to do an Inexpensive Laundry Room Update!

✅ This is the faucet we used on our laundry room utility sink.

It’s an excellent brand faucet and yet, you’ll also find that it is one of the best quality options you’ll find online.

Laundry room before updated

Whenever I look back at this BEFORE picture, I can’t believe we bought our house in the condition it was in! I look back now and wonder, “what were we thinking!?”  LOL! But now that our home is coming together with slow, budget-friendly updated, we see the dreams that we had for this home.

We updated our laundry room in phases in order to save money and keep our laundry room update on a budget. These phases weren’t planned but sort of just happened in phases… that’s the best way to slowly update your home without spending a ton of money upfront!

Phase 1 – Laundry Room Cabinet and Walls

We added an upper cabinet that we took from the kitchen. We were lucky that the upper cabinet we removed from the kitchen fit in the laundry room PERFECTLY!

I painted the cabinets gray (and later painted them white) by following this tutorial to paint kitchen cabinets.

Then I added peel and stick subway tile wallpaper  and floral wallpaper from Dollar Tree (you can read all about wallpaper, where to find it , and how to apply it in this post).

My hubby build a bench with storage for our shoes.

We added plywood shiplap on the wall with coat hooks and I made a huge sign that said Wash and Fold.

Then we added a wood stained shelf using industrial brackets under the cabinets for extra storage.

Our laundry room stayed that way for about 1.5 years until I decided to update our entryway coat closet into a mudroom.

Having a huge mudroom meant that we no longer needed the bench in the laundry room so I decided to go back to having a sink in the laundry room. Luckily my hubby just closed the seals on the plumbing and built the bench around the plumbing in case we ever wanted to put a sink back in that space.

Phase 2 – Laundry Room Floors and Ceiling

Painting Tile Floors

I decided to stencil and paint the tile floors in the laundry room. I used a gorgeous stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils (which you can find here) and white chalk paint. I sealed the floor with water based polyurethane.

With the busy stencilled floors, I ended up removing the floral wallpaper.

The next update in our laundry room update was to get rid of the popcorn ceilings. The easiest solution was to cover the ceiling with bead board.

We also added a fun ceiling light with a remote to control the mood color, temperature, and motion activated.

After about a month or so, I noticed the grout started to yellow on my pretty stencilled floors 🙁  So I decided to paint the entire floor Benjamin Moore Gray.

This time, I was very carfeul applying the water based polyurethane.

Once the floors were painted, we were ready to add the sink and a DIY vanity into the room.

Phase 3 – DIY Laundry Room Sink Cabinet Base

We built the base for our laundry room sink. We built this vanity using wood and based the measurements off of our laundry baskets (hehe!). I wanted a specific basket to fit UNDER the plumbing and sink so I had my hubby build a vanity around those measurements.

We built the base and then went shopping for a sink. We found our sink at a Your Home Discount Wharehouse, a local Home Depot reseller store and we got an amazing deal on it!

Once we had the sink, we finished the top of the base so the sink would fit.

Then I painted and stained the base.

Once the sink was installed on the vanity, we used an old faucet in the sink until we found the perfect Laundry Room Sink Faucet from Vigo.

How to pick the right paint colors

Have you ever had trouble picking the right paint colors for your home? Choosing the right paint colors for your home can be overwhelming. There are so many different “whites” and “grays” these days, how can anyone know they are making the right paint color choice?

That’s why I put together the best tips on How to Choose Interior Paint Colors in this post.

Every home is different… the entryway in our first home was much different than the entryway in our second home, and both of those were very different from the entryway in our third home! So I chose a different paint color for each entryway in all three of our homes. Not to mention, from the time that we bought our first home, to the time that we bought our third home, home paint color trends changed drastically. The colors that I used back then are no longer a trendy color and well, I just didn’t like the brown-ish tan that was in our first home, haha.

So if you need help choosing paint colors for the rest of your home, head on over to this post to see my paint-picking tips and what has worked for me in all three of our homes 🙂 My post with how to choose paint colors for your home is one of my most popular posts and readers have benefited from reading it before heading to the store to buy paint that ends up not working out.

I also have some ideas for choosing paint color combinations for bedrooms (with themes!)

Paint Versus Peel & Stick Wallpaper

Peel and stick wallpaper has become very popular recently since not everyone has access to tools to build their own Shiplap walls (thanks Chip and Joanna) or wants to tile an entire wall with subway tile. I love tiling but if I could slap up some wallpaper and call it a day, that would make me, the hubby, and my wallet happy!

You can find peel and stick wallpaper online at Target, Amazon, Home Depot, and more! I’ve linked my favorite peel and stick wallpaper and the ones I’ve used personally below.

✅ This is the peel and stick wallpaper that I use in my home.   It is reasonably priced and very good quality!
If you really like the idea of peel and stick wallpaper but have never used it before, I highly recommend reading my tips on using peel and stick wallpaper and checking out the different kinds of wallpaper that’ll instantly update your space!
There are so many different designs and colors and once you get the hang of applying the wallpaper, you will want to put peel and stick wallpaper in the closet, cabinets, bookcases, and more!
In our third home, I used this peel and stick wallpaper in our Entryway, this peel and stick wallpaper in our eating area, and this peel and stick wallpaper as our kitchen backsplash.
Using peel and stick wallpaper has definitely given us the ability to update our home quickly without all the hassle of cutting shiplap, faux wood, or tiling!
If you decide to try peel and stick wallpaper, I highly recommend reading my tips on using peel and stick wallpaper and checking out the different kinds of wallpaper that’ll instantly update your space!
