How Can I Maximize My Garage Storage Space?

What is the Best Way to Organize a Messy Garage?
Using garage storage systems and organizing items will help you create order from chaos. Here are helpful tips to organize your garage on a budget.
Garage Mudroom DIY
We decluttered our entire garage before creating organized areas. We applied epoxy to the floor to really clean up the garage. I also removed EVERYTHING from the walls, patched them, and painted them, which made a huge difference in the cleanliness of the garage. The floor is brand new and we had a fresh start before putting storage furniture back in.
To create our Garage Mudroom, I used old Ikea bookcases against a cinder block wall. These bookcases were recently used in our home office/craft room. I redid my craft room several months before this garage project and saved them to use in the garage or our shed.
I used several different bins, baskets, and bags to organize items on the bookcases. You will notice Dollar Tree plastic baskets and lots of gym/sports bags in our garage mudroom.
All of our tools and garden equipment are stored in our shed. We keep a small toolbox, a blower, and a ladder in the garage for convenience. Everything else in in our shed.
We used these hooks to hold our fishing rods and we found these hooks at Home Depot to hold my husband’s golf clubs.
We used bike hooks to hang up our bikes. We have 4 bikes total and 3 of them are on the window wall.
5 Steps to Organize a Garage
- Sort items into groups – Create piles of items that you want to keep, those you want to donate, and those you want to throw away.
- Clean the area and throw away garbage – Sweep and mop the floor and remove any dust, dirt, or cobwebs. Throw away any items that are in poor condition or are no longer useful.
- Install storage solutions – Install shelves, hooks, and peg boards to store items. You can also use bins or baskets to organize small items.
- Label and organize your items – Label the areas for each type of item and place them in their designated spots.
- Utilize wall space – Use wall space for items that are used frequently by mounting them on the walls. This way, they are easy to reach and can save you space.
