Tips for Packing for a 7-Night Alaskan Cruise in June on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships

We took a 7-Night cruise to Alaska from Seattle, WA in June of 2024 and it was the BEST vacation our family has ever taken. I was VERY stressed out before our trip because we live in Florida and my kids do not own any Winter clothing. I wasn’t sure if we needed outerwear for snowy or rainy weather. We had friends that took this same trip in May and it was drastically different weather from May to June! My friend said to make sure we packed waterproof clothes, jackets, pants, and shoes. WATERPROOF is the keyword here! You do not need snow boots or snow pants. I brought a winter coat and was comfortable wearing that in the mornings but in the afternoon, a simple sweatshirt or rain jacket with layers is I needed.

Leggings are your best friend on an Alaska Cruise! I could’ve worn leggings the entire week and no one would’ve noticed. My goal was to be cozy and comfy on this trip so I packed leggings and sweatpants. For formal nights (there are 2 formal nights on a 7-night cruise), a simple convertible dress like this one will do or wear nice slacks and a nice top. Our cruise had themed nights as well (Caribbean night and wear all-white night) but it’s up to you if you want to dress for those nights.

I struggled with what shoes to bring on an Alaska Cruise! Hiking boots are essential if you plan on taking an excursion into the wilderness. If you plan to stay onboard or shop in ports, then casual shoes or sneakers are all you need! My hiking boots broke after our Bike and Hike excursion and I ended up wearing my sneakers the last 2 days. You can get away without hiking boots in June on an Alaska Cruise since it doesn’t rain as much. It didn’t rain at all on our trip so we didn’t need waterproof items! As for formal shoes, I brought my Croc sandals because they are comfortable enough to walk all over the ship and still look fancy.

If I took this trip again, I would pack enough basics to last 5 days and re-wear some items. On days when you are cruising, you can wear the same outfit twice or mix and match basics. I hang items that I feel could be worn again in the stateroom closet and mix and match items. I would also skip bringing a winter coat. It came in handy when I was on the ship deck but I could’ve worn lots of layers with a raincoat and would’ve been very comfortable!

When we returned to Seattle, we had enough time to explore Bainbridge Island so we took an Uber back to the hotel we stayed at the first night, then walked to Pike Place, then to the ferry station. We walked all over Bainbridge and then back to downtown Seattle, near the Space Needle. It was A LOT of walking and the temperature reached 70 degrees. I wish I had packed bike shorts in my backpack to change into! You never know how the weather will be so pack layers and yes, even shorts!

Packing for Kids on an Alaskan Cruise

When it came to packing for kids, I packed pretty much the same things I brought. I packed joggers for both my son and daughter and one formal outfit that they wore twice. I found hiking boots on Amazon for everyone and my hubby found boots that were casual and dressy with khakis for a formal night. My sone wears a lot of white t-shirts and my daughter wears band tees with cardigans or hoodies.

How To Pack For a 7-Day Alaska Cruise

By packing thoughtfully and considering the varied conditions you’ll encounter, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the full spectrum of experiences that an Alaska cruise offers. After reading this post, I hope you enjoy your journey through the majestic wilderness!

Can you wear shorts on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes, you can wear shorts on an Alaskan cruise, but it depends on the time of year and your personal tolerance for cooler temperatures. Alaska’s weather can be quite variable, with summer temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 10-25°C). During the peak summer months of June, July, and August, there may be warm and sunny days that are perfect for wearing shorts, especially when participating in activities like hiking or lounging on deck.

However, it’s important to pack layers and be prepared for cooler and unpredictable weather. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, and coastal winds can make it feel even colder. Therefore, along with shorts, it is wise to bring along long pants, a good waterproof jacket, and warmer layers such as sweaters or fleeces. This will ensure you are comfortable no matter what the weather brings.

Additionally, some cruise excursions, such as glacier tours or wildlife viewing, might require warmer clothing even in summer. Always check the specific requirements and recommendations for any excursions you plan to participate in. By packing a versatile wardrobe that includes both shorts and warmer clothing, you’ll be ready to enjoy all the incredible sights and activities an Alaskan cruise has to offer.

How do you pack light for an Alaskan cruise?

Packing light for an Alaskan cruise can be a bit challenging due to the variable weather conditions, but with some thoughtful planning, you can ensure you have everything you need without overloading your suitcase. Start by selecting versatile clothing that can be layered. The weather in Alaska can range from chilly to mild, so layering is key. Pack a few moisture-wicking base layers, a couple of warm mid-layers like leggings and sweatshirts, and a waterproof outer layer. This way, you can mix and match pieces to stay comfortable in different temperatures.

Next, focus on packing multi-purpose items. For instance, choose a pair of comfortable walking shoes that are also suitable for casual dinners on board. Lightweight, quick-dry clothing can be useful for excursions and can be easily washed and re-worn. Consider bringing a compressible down jacket, which provides warmth without taking up much space, and a compact rain poncho or umbrella for unexpected showers.

Finally, don’t forget the essentials. A good pair of binoculars can enhance your wildlife viewing experience, and a small backpack will be handy for day trips. Opt for travel-sized toiletries and consider using packing cubes to keep your suitcase organized. Remember to pack important documents, medications, and chargers in your carry-on. By prioritizing versatility and necessities, you’ll be well-prepared for your Alaskan adventure without the burden of excess luggage.

Checklist for Alaska Cruise

Here’s a comprehensive packing list to ensure you’re well-prepared for your Alaskan cruise adventure:

Clothing:

  • Layered Clothing: The key to comfort in Alaska’s unpredictable weather is layering. Pack a mix of short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a lightweight fleece or wool jumper.
  • Outerwear: A waterproof, windproof jacket is essential for those misty, rainy days or when you’re near the glaciers. A hood is a useful addition.
  • Bottoms: Include both warm trousers and lighter options. Waterproof pants are recommended for excursions.
  • Formal Attire: Royal Caribbean cruises often have formal dining nights, so bring along an evening dress or suit.
  • Footwear: Waterproof, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots for excursions, casual shoes for onboard, and formal shoes for dinner nights.
  • Accessories: Waterproof gloves, a warm hat, scarves, and sunglasses. Don’t forget a swimsuit for the hot tubs!

Gear and Gadgets:

  • Binoculars: Ideal for wildlife spotting from the deck.
  • Camera: With extra batteries or charger to capture the stunning landscapes.
  • Waterproof Backpack or Bag: For carrying essentials during excursions.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated without adding plastic waste.

Other Essentials:

  • Sunscreen and Lip Balm: The Alaskan sun can be surprisingly strong, especially on reflective glacier days.
  • Insect Repellent: Especially handy during shore excursions.
  • First Aid Kit: Include motion sickness remedies if you’re prone to seasickness.
  • Travel Documents: Passport, travel insurance, cruise documents, and any necessary visas.

Toiletries and Personal Items:

  • Remember your personal toiletries, but keep in mind that space in cabins can be limited, so pack efficiently. Many cruise ships offer hair dryers in the room, so you might leave yours at home to save space.

Entertainment:

  • Books, e-readers, and any other compact entertainment options for leisure time.

Remember, while packing for your cruise, it’s important to consider the specific activities you plan to participate in, as this might necessitate additional specialized gear. Most importantly, pack a sense of adventure and readiness to explore the incredible beauty and unique experiences that an Alaskan cruise has to offer.

What to Bring on an Alaskan Cruise

Wrap Up About What to Pack for an Alaskan Cruise

Embarking on an Alaskan cruise promises breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable adventures, but packing wisely is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Given the region’s variable weather and the range of activities available, layering is key. Start with moisture-wicking base layers to keep dry, followed by insulating mid-layers like fleece or down to provide warmth. An outer layer that is both waterproof and windproof will protect you from the elements, especially during excursions to glaciers or wildlife spotting on deck. Don’t forget a warm hat, gloves, and a scarf to shield against chilly winds.

Footwear is another crucial consideration. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are ideal for shore excursions that involve walking on rugged terrain or through wet conditions. A comfortable pair of walking shoes or sneakers is also important for exploring ports of call and onboard activities. Additionally, slip-resistant shoes are advisable for navigating potentially slippery ship decks. Packing a pair of dress shoes or nicer footwear is also wise, as many cruises have formal nights or dining options that require more elegant attire.

Other essential items include a high-quality pair of binoculars for wildlife viewing, a camera to capture the stunning scenery, and sunscreen to protect against UV rays, even in cooler climates. A reusable water bottle and a small daypack for shore excursions can be very handy. Finally, consider bringing motion sickness remedies if you are prone to seasickness, as well as any necessary medications and travel documents. With thoughtful preparation, your Alaskan cruise will be a seamless and memorable adventure.
