Cheap or Free Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is a special occasion to honor and express gratitude to the remarkable women in our lives who have nurtured, loved, and guided us through life’s challenges. However, showing our appreciation doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag. There are countless ways to make your mother feel cherished without spending a dime. In this introduction, we’ll explore 10 free Mother’s Day gift ideas that are not only cost-effective but are also heartfelt and meaningful. From handmade crafts to personalized experiences, these suggestions are designed to celebrate the unique bond between mothers and their children, ensuring that this Mother’s Day is memorable, without breaking the bank. Keep reading to see these 10 Free Mother’s Day Gift Ideas!

You can't go wrong with advice from another mom. I'd much rather receive one of these free gifts any day than receive a materialistic item for Mother's Day.

1. Help Around The House

On Mother’s Day, the most heartfelt gifts are often those that come from the creativity and thoughtfulness of children. Kids can offer their moms an array of free gifts that speak volumes about their love and appreciation. They might craft a handmade card adorned with personal messages and decorations, or they could prepare breakfast in bed, serving up simple dishes with the help of another adult.

Another cherished gesture is the gift of time—children can plan a day filled with mom’s favorite activities, whether that’s a peaceful walk in the park, a movie marathon of her favorite films, or even a quiet afternoon of reading together. These gifts, devoid of monetary value, are priceless in the eyes of a mother, as they reflect the time, effort, and love her children are willing to invest in making her feel special and appreciated.

Here are cheap or free ideas for Mother’s Day…

1. Help Around the House

Ask mom if she’d like help around the house or just do her chores for her. Maybe because I’m “the mom” I think my kids are so accustomed that I will be the one to pick up after them, but there are many times that I wish someone else would do it before I had the chance to even see it needed to be done (or hire a maid to do it for me, haha).

For example – the dishes piled in the sink – how did the sink get filled up in the first place?  How many meals had to happen before someone actually washes dishes or places them in the dishwasher instead of the sink?  Or clothes were thrown on the floor next to a full laundry hamper – can the kids do the laundry before the basket gets so full that clothes are being thrown on the floor instead?

It would be nice for Mother’s Day if the kids stopped these things from piling up or helped out with these chores 🙂

2. BackRub/Foot Massage

You can ask any woman (or man) if they would like a quick neck/back/foot rub and I bet they wouldn’t turn it down.  My young kids even give a half decent back rub – which consists of mostly pounding on my back, but it’s the connection and getting to relax for a bit which feels good.  Offer mom a quick massage or offer to give one at a later time.  Even a 5-minute massage makes a huge difference!

3. Make a Meal (and clean up the mess)

Breakfast in bed is a popular meal to make for Mother’s Day and breakfast is also probably the easiest meal for young kids to make.  Make it special by getting up early and letting mom sleep in while you prepare something for her.  Try making a picnic lunch or taking her “al fresco” dining.  Or the kids could make a romantic dinner for mom and dad to enjoy in the dining room alone 😉  Don’t forget that if you are making a meal you should clean up the mess too!

This 5-Minute Healthy Kale & Quinoa Salad is one of my favorite clean eating recipes! I've made this salad in a hotel room (that was equipped with a mini fridge and microwave) and my family was able to eat a little bit healthier while on vacation.

4. Wild Flowers

I love fresh flowers in the house but I hate spending money on beautiful flowers when they don’t live very long.  If you have access to wildflowers or even flowers from your own yard, pick some for mom and place in a vase with a cute note or leave on/in her car.

5. Handmade Gifts

Coupon books are really popular gifts for Mothers Day or you could try to make this paper flower corsage or draw/paint a picture of the two of you together.  Think about what your mom likes and make her something related to that.

If she likes reading, make her a special bookmark.  If she likes gardening, make her a special flower pot or garden markers using rocks.  A handmade picture frame (with a picture of the two of you) for her bedside table is another idea.

A handmade gift is unique and special because she knows you were thinking of her when you made it.  If you need a few ideas for a handmade gift, try this printable Flower Corsage or these printable Note Cards.

6. Bake Anything with Chocolate

I don’t know many women that don’t like chocolate.  My kids could make me a hot chocolate, chocolate cake or cookies and I’d be happy.  If you can make more extravagant, indulgent treats like truffles, mousse or chocolate cheesecake – do it!  She will love it!  My mouth is watering for some dark chocolate now, bahaha!

7. Write a Heartfelt Letter

Words from the heart are one of the best gifts that you can give your mother.  Tell her how much you mean to her in a letter or poem.  Tell a story about a day that you were together that you will never forget or how she’s impacted your life or what you love about her.  Moms LOVE stuff like this!  My kid could write “I love my mom, she is my best friend” and I’m in tears!

8. Make a Special Video

I’m not very tech savvy when it comes to editing videos but I’m pretty sure there is an app or program that you can use to take home videos (or still-shot photos) and make a beautiful video for mom.  I personally would love something like this (*hint to the hubby if you are reading*).

I have several home family videos on YouTube that I would love to see compiled into a video like a “best of ___ family video” for mom.  You could also make a video telling your mom how much you mean to her or what you would write in a heartfelt letter (just in a video instead).

9. Alone Time

Some moms just need a break from the kids, but with that being said, I’ve always found that moms also want to spend Mother’s Day with their kids so there is no alone time on Mother’s Day.  If she likes spending Mother’s Day with the kids then offer another day of alone time – maybe the following weekend dad can take the kids out of the house so mom can do what she wants, in a big, empty house all to herself.

It sounds wonderful but I know if it was me, I would find something to clean and I wouldn’t have any relaxing time alone, lol!  I would need to go somewhere to really enjoy my alone time – so if you’re like me, try going to the beach or a park and read a book or magazine.

10. A (Really Good) Hug

Now that I’m older, I don’t hug my mom like I used to when I was a kid – you know, those 60-second long comfort hugs?  The last time I hugged my mom like that was probably when my father passed away 3 years ago, which is well, pretty sad.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I see my mother once a week and we do hug, but it’s more of a casual hug.  The hubby’s mom passed away before I met him and I remember asking him when we met what was the one thing he missed his mom and he said her hugs.

Hugs are powerful.  As a mom with two kids under the age of 5, I can’t get enough of those really good hugs and snuggles from my kids.  I bet my mom misses hugs like that and would enjoy a sincere loving hug from her older kids.  A really good hug provides gifts of joy and contentment and doesn’t cost a thing.

There’s no need to run out and spend money on mom for Mother’s Day because you can’t buy what mom really wants.  Sure she may say that she wants that $300 handbag, but these 10 things that are free and also priceless.

Try something different by helping mom around the house, giving her a back rub, making her a meal (or anything with chocolate!), give her a handmade gift or make a special video.  Give her some alone time to reconnect with herself, write her a letter from the heart or give her a big bear hug so she feels the love.
