WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS
It’s okay if you aren’t entirely sure what essential oils are and their purpose – I didn’t either until 2016, however, I wish I knew about them 20 years ago!
Essential Oils are natural oils extracted from plants and trees. From Young Living’s Website: “Extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, the purest essential oils are far more powerful than the botanical from which they come.
Essential oils have enhanced lives for thousands of years, offering a variety of benefits from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use.”
You can use essential oils topically, inhale them, or ingest them. When applied topically, the oils travel through your bloodstream and every cell in your body in about 20 minutes.
You can inhale essential oils by diffusing them or simply inhaling directly from the bottle. Some oils can be ingested by adding a few drops to beverages, food or in a capsule. I’ve personally experienced major positive health changes by ingesting essential oils after discovering I had an overactive thyroid and Graves Disease.

What To Do When You Get Your Young Living Starter Kit
The first thing I did was break out that awesome diffuser and added water up to it with 6 drops of lemon essential oil. My home smelled amazing!
Then I put everything aside and sort of forgot about them, haha.
Don’t be like me! Put those oils to good use right away so you can see their real benefits!

Stock Up on Supplies to Make the Most of Your Essential Oils
There are so many different essential oils supplies these days, it’s hard to know which ones are the best quality and functionality. Instead of searching Amazon and reading countless product reviews, check out my post with 15 Incredibly Useful Supplies If You Use Essential Oils which features the basic essential oils supplies I personally use and love.
The EO Supplies I Use Most Often Are:
Invest in a Carrier Oil
When you first start using essential oils, you will notice many recipes call for a “carrier oil” and might think “what the heck is that?” At least that’s what I thought, hehe.
A carrier oil is an oil used to dilute or create the base of the final product you are creating and they help “carry” the oil into the skin. My favorite carrier oil is grapeseed oil but you can use fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, and avocado oil.
Store Your Essential Oils in a Cool Dark Place
Sun rays are the worst enemy of essential oils. They can rob the oil of its scent and properties, so make sure you protect your DIY project by protecting it from light in a dark glass container. I keep my essential oils in this awesome wooden box and use this protective travel case when I go on long trips and want to bring my oils and roller balls along.
Only Use Amber or Cobalt Glass Bottles for Your Essential Oils Creations
Keep your essential oils and DIY products in dark glass bottles if possible. Some recipes may suggest using a plastic container. Please be advised to that plastic containers will absorb essential oils and the oils properties and scent will be lost over time. These are my favorite 2 oz. amber glass spray bottles and these are my favorite cobalt blue roller bottles.
Label Your Oil DIYs
It’s easy to assume you will remember what’s in the roller bottle you just created but a few months later you probably won’t. Make sure to label your creations.
I make it really easy with these awesome products (most which are free!)

Keep Your Oil Supplies Organized
When I started collecting different types of essential oils and supplies to make my own natural products, I noticed I was running all over the house to gather supplies just to make one thing. I had oils in my bedroom, supplies in the bathroom, and more supplies in my craft room or kitchen.
To simplify things, I created a few printable labels to organize everything. Now I have 3 baskets in my craft room with these labels on them. When I need to make something, everything is in one place.
I also use this amazing wooden box to store all of my essential oils and I use this travel bag for my roller bottles and oils when I travel.
Keep Your Essential Oils Out of the Reach of Children
Read disclaimers on each and every essential oil you own. Some say to keep out of the reach of children or pregnant/nursing women. Others have specific warnings that you should educate yourself about before willy-nilly applying directly to your skin or ingesting.
Dilute Essential Oils Before Applying Directly To Skin
Always do a skin test when using DIY roller bottles to make sure you don’t have a skin allergy. All roller ball recipes should be diluted with a carrier oil (see above: What is a Carrier Oil).
Never Use Citrus Essential Oils If Your Skin Will Be Exposed to the Sun
This one may seem like common sense to most people but I recently saw a headline about a girl who applied orange and lemon oils all over her neck and wrists then went to a tanning bed, only to emerge with severe burns. Young Living has warnings on citrus oil bottles stating to avoid sun exposure if applied to the skin, so please make sure to read every bottle.
Using essential oils has benefited my family in more ways than one. These tips should help you be a little bit healthier when incorporating essential oils into your daily use.
WHERE TO BUY ESSENTIAL OILS
I only use Young Living essential oils because of the quality and their method of distilling produce the best essential oils available on the market today. In fact, Young Living has a Seed to Seal guarantee that surpasses any other oil company’s guarantee of the quality and purity of their oils. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’d rather pay a little more guaranteed quality oils than paying a little less for cheap oils that may or may not provide the same benefit.
Also, Do Not Buy Young Living Essential Oils from Amazon, eBay or other third-party sites.
The reason I only buy oils directly from Young Living is the same reason I wouldn’t buy a designer handbag from the back of a van on a street corner. It’s probably not the real thing or has been tampered with in some way. You wouldn’t want to apply or ingest an “oil” that someone put something strange in or receive a bottle of “water” instead of oil (trust me, this happens all the time!). Please don’t be the one that gets scammed by buying essential oils anywhere other than Young Living!
Now that that’s out of the way, here are few more facts & benefits that Young Living offers:

Still, have questions?
FAQ’s
I’m including some frequently asked questions below about Young Living and the membership so in case you have the same concerns, here are my answers to the most frequently asked questions:
Q1: The essential oils at Amazon or my local Target /Walmart are so much cheaper than Young Living. What’s the difference?
I only use Young Living essential oils because the quality and their method of distilling produce the best essential oils available on the market today.
Q2: What’s the difference between a Young Living Retail Customer and a Member?
The real difference is the discount and rewards program. You are not obligated to sell Young Living products as a member but the option is there if you decide you want to. Let me break it down so you can see the difference:
Retail Customer:
- You are not obligated to sell anything
- No one will ever ask you to sell anything
- You pay full price for all YL products
Member:
- You are not obligated to sell anything
- No one will ever ask you to sell anything
- You get a 24% discount on all YL products
- Enjoy benefits & convenience of Essential Rewards (free products!)
I signed up as a member so I could get the starter kit, the discount, and the option to sell the products later. Since I started using oils in March 2016, I have enjoyed tons of FREE products from being a member. I take advantage of the essential rewards where they basically give you money back to buy more products AND they send you free stuff every few months just for using the essential rewards program.
So it’s kind of a no-brainer if you like saving money to become a member.
Q3: Do I have to purchase the starter kit if I become a member?
Yes, you will need to purchase the starter kit as a new member. However, I highly recommend starting with the starter kit anyway so you can experience all the oils. Plus, with the membership, you get a discount on the starter kit along with 24% off on anything else you purchase later on.
With the membership, you are not obligated to sell anything or buy anything else ever again – but I personally started with the membership and a few months later started using the rewards program.
Q4: Do I have to provide my SSN or Tax ID?
No, you do not need to provide your Social Security Number or Tax ID when you sign up as a member. You will only need to provide your SSN or Tax ID if you choose to sell Young Living products (they need that information because you would essentially be an employee).
Q5: If I become a member, do I have to sell anything?
No, you are not obligated to sell anything and you can just enjoy the extra discount and perks.
Q6: Is there a requirement for me to place a monthly order or a requirement for a certain amount I must spend?
No, you are not required to place a monthly order. You can make a purchase at your discretion. However, if you find that you are ordering every month and spending over $50 a month, I highly recommend signing up for the Essential Rewards program (read more about that in Q8 below).
Q7: Is there a membership fee?
Nope, there is not a membership fee 🙂
Q8: What is the Essential Rewards program and should I sign up for it?
The rewards program allows you to set up a monthly auto-ship and you get rewards points for your purchases that you can redeem at a later time. I just redeemed my rewards from the past 3 months and I got $100 worth of free oils!
There is a minimum of $50/month purchase when you join rewards but you can change the ship date to work with your budget. I found that I was spending over $50 a month anyway so it was a no-brainer to sign up to get some “cash” back.

Keep in mind the rewards program and the extra 24% off discount is only available to members.
