Easy Wall Stencils for Painting

If you love the idea of adding texture and design on your walls but the idea of wallpaper doesn’t appeal to you, then stenciling a wall is probably your best solution. In this tutorial, I share how to stencil a wall with a large stencil, how to stencil a wall without bleeding, and how to stencil the popular farmhouse herringbone brick pattern on your wall. Keep reading to learn How To Stencil a Wall and watch the time-lapse video showing you how I stenciled our Master Bedroom wall.

This shop has been compensated by Cutting Edge Stencils. All opinions are mine alone.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly stencils, keep reading!

✅ This is the wall stencil I used on our bedroom wall. This stencil is a large stencil so you can paint a large area very quickly.

What Kind of Paint Do You Use for Stenciling?

It depends on what you want to stencil. Use the type of paint that is appropriate for the surface you are stenciling. The brand of paint that I used for our herringbone wall stencil was Behr, Paint, and Primer in One with an eggshell finish.

How Do You Stencil a Wall With Chalk Paint?

You can stencil a wall with chalked paint the same way that you would regular wall paint. The only difference with chalked paint is the finish is chalky.

Easy Wall Stencils For Painting

My favorite wall stencils are from Cutting Edge Stencils. I’ve used other stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils for various other projects, including stenciling tile floors 🙂

Extra Large Wall Stencils

The stencil that I used on our master bedroom wall was an extra-large stencil. Using a large stencil has it’s positive and negative benefits. On the positive side, it makes painting the square footage fast. On the negative side, it can be cumbersome to move around on a wall since you have gravity working against you. Just make sure you have extra tape to hold your stencil to the wall and you’ll be good 🙂

How To Stencil A Wall

In this tutorial, I share step-by-step instructions to use Cutting Edge Stencils to stencil a wall. If you have never stenciled before, I suggest practicing on a small area and deciding what paint colors you’d like to use.

You need to pick a paint color for the background and one for the stencil image. If you need help choosing paint colors, please refer to this detailed post.

Let’s get started with the supplies needed to stencil a wall…

Supplies:
  • Stencil (I used this herringbone brick stencil for our master bedroom wall)
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Stencil brushes
  • Paint Brush (for distressing, touching up, etc)
  • Paint Roller & Tray
  • Paint (I used BM Simply White for the background & BM Revere Pewter for the bricks)
  • Craft Paint (I used Wet Cement by Martha Stewart)
  • Chalked Paint (I used Linen to distress the bricks)
  • Rags

Directions:
  1. Gather Supplies. Please watch the video below with more instructions and pictures! How To Stencil A Wall without bleeding, How To Stencil A Wall tutorials, How To Stencil A Wall bedrooms, How To Stencil A Wall border, DIY How To Stencil A Wall, stencil patterns, stencil templates, how to put stencils on a wall, how to make a wall stencil, cutting edge stencils, herringbone stencil, cutting edge herringbone stencil, cutting edge herringbone brick stencil, stencil patterns DIY, stencil patterns farmhouse, stencil patterns ideas, stencil patterns for bedroom, herringbone brick stencil
  2. My stencil came with a top piece to start so if your’s have that, start with the top piece.
  3. Use painter’s tape to secure all 4 sides of the stencil to the wall. Cutting Edge Stencils has a handy video showing how to DIY a stenciled wall too!
  4. Use the paint roller or stencil brushes to stencil your design.
  5. Once all the spaces are painted inside your stencil, remove the stencil, and align with the next area on the wall.
  6. Once you have the entire top of the wall complete, move to the first row. This stencil was very large, combined with gravity working against me, while trying to video-record myself made it a bit difficult. But if I can do it then you can too 😉
  7. Repeat this process until the wall is complete.
  8. I had to go back and add bricks on the sides of the wall and the bottom of the wall.
  9. I also had to touch up many areas with bleeding or spots.  These mistakes were mostly because I rushed to complete my wall. If you take your time and let each section dry, you will not have as many mistakes as me, lol. 10. I wanted my brick wall to look as authentic as possible so I used a darker gray paint inside the bricks.
  11. Then once everything was dry, I dry-brushed Chalked paint over the bricks and “washed” the color into the bricks.
  12. You can totally skip distressing if you like the way your wall looks.

I can’t wait to try this Cutting Edge Stencil on my floors too!

How to pick the right paint colors

Have you ever had trouble picking the right paint colors for your home? Choosing the right paint colors for your home can be overwhelming. There are so many different “whites” and “grays” these days, how can anyone know they are making the right paint color choice?

That’s why I put together the best tips on How to Choose Interior Paint Colors in this post.

Every home is different… the entryway in our first home was much different than the entryway in our second home, and both of those were very different from the entryway in our third home! So I chose a different paint color for each entryway in all three of our homes. Not to mention, from the time that we bought our first home, to the time that we bought our third home, home paint color trends changed drastically. The colors that I used back then are no longer a trendy color and well, I just didn’t like the brown-ish tan that was in our first home, haha.

So if you need help choosing paint colors for the rest of your home, head on over to this post to see my paint-picking tips and what has worked for me in all three of our homes 🙂 My post with how to choose paint colors for your home is one of my most popular posts and readers have benefited from reading it before heading to the store to buy paint that ends up not working out.

I also have some ideas for choosing paint color combinations for bedrooms (with themes!)

Paint Versus Peel & Stick Wallpaper

Peel and stick wallpaper has become very popular recently since not everyone has access to tools to build their own Shiplap walls (thanks Chip and Joanna) or wants to tile an entire wall with subway tile. I love tiling but if I could slap up some wallpaper and call it a day, that would make me, the hubby, and my wallet happy!

You can find peel and stick wallpaper online at Target, Amazon, Home Depot, and more! I’ve linked my favorite peel and stick wallpaper and the ones I’ve used personally below.

✅ This is the peel and stick wallpaper that I use in my home.   It is reasonably priced and very good quality!
If you really like the idea of peel and stick wallpaper but have never used it before, I highly recommend reading my tips on using peel and stick wallpaper and checking out the different kinds of wallpaper that’ll instantly update your space!
There are so many different designs and colors and once you get the hang of applying the wallpaper, you will want to put peel and stick wallpaper in the closet, cabinets, bookcases, and more!
In our third home, I used this peel and stick wallpaper in our Entryway, this peel and stick wallpaper in our eating area, and this peel and stick wallpaper as our kitchen backsplash.
Using peel and stick wallpaper has definitely given us the ability to update our home quickly without all the hassle of cutting shiplap, faux wood, or tiling!
If you decide to try peel and stick wallpaper, I highly recommend reading my tips on using peel and stick wallpaper and checking out the different kinds of wallpaper that’ll instantly update your space!
