Repurposed DIY Wall Art with Cricut Vinyl
I took this old wall art canvas and turned it into a personalized wall art sign using Cricut vinyl. You can use any printed framed art canvas to create a similar Cricut DIY wall hanging. My kids helped create this personalized Man Cave wall art to give their grandfather for Father’s Day. This sign is part of a bigger home improvement project to makeover a sunroom into a getaway space for my Father in Law. We chose a Man Cave SVG to complete this Cricut DIY project. Can I make wall decals with my Cricut?

How To Make Cricut Vinyl Art Canvas Wall ArtÂ
To make Cricut vinyl art canvas wall art, first gather all necessary materials including a Cricut machine, vinyl, transfer tape, canvas, and any additional decorations. I used materials I had in my craft room (I always stock up on Cricut vinyl sales from here!) and repurposed an art canvas that was headed for the trash so this project was completely FREE!
Supplies:
- Cricut Explore Air 3 Machine
- Cricut Roll Holder
- Cricut Tool Set
- 12 x 24 Green Cutting Mat
- Oracal 651 VinylÂ
- Clear Contact Paper
- Mod Podge
- Sponge Brushes
- Craft Paint
- SVG File
Directions:
- This is the printed art canvas before we painted over it. you can tell it was printed so I’m not worried that I’m painting over an expensive piece of artwork here. Just something to think about before you paint over a painting you found in your parent’s attic!
- We used basic black acrylic paint and some Dollar Tree brushes. I had my kids help because what kid doesn’t love making a mess with paint?
- While the paint was drying, I headed over to my computer in Cricut Design Space and I uploaded the SVG file into a new project.
- Then I needed to size it to fit the square canvas instead of the rectangle shape shown here.
- So I selected the entire image to make sure it was grouped.
- I unlocked the size of the grouped image and changed the height and width to 30 inches.
- I noticed I had the error notification that the size was too large to cut on my mat so I kept playing around with the sizing until all of the text was under 23.5 inches.
- Then I ungrouped the text and started welding a few lines and images together to reduce how many moving parts we’d have on the mat.
- I highlighted each image and when I saw the size was under 23.5 inches, I’d weld those pieces together so they cut together. This just makes it easier to put them all together on the sign later on.
- Then I saved the project and was ready to start cutting.
- I checked out what the mats looked like and choose the material premium vinyl and set the pressure to cut more.
- Then I headed over to my machine and unrolled my 651 vinyl which I placed in the roll holder and then on my green cutting mat. I love using this roller for clean cuts and to keep those long vinyl rolls from rolling all over the place.
- Once all the mats were cut, I weeded the images and placed contact paper on the main image.
- I laid out all the other cuts to create the final image on my canvas to make sure I had the placement correct.
- Then I used the contact paper over the entire thing to create one big decal.
- I peeled off the paper backing and placed it on the canvas. I actually prefer to lay large signs like this on the ground so I can really see if it’s perfectly positioned.
- Then I pressed the vinyl onto the surface on the front and back sides.
- I carefully peeled off the contact paper to reveal the decal.
- I decided to use mod podge over the vinyl so there’s no peeling over time. My kids helped spread the glue over the entire frame which dried clear.
- Then we hung the sign in their grandpa’s new man cave!

How To Choose a Cricut Machine
I bought my first Cricut machine in 2013… it was called the Cricut mini and was one of the first Cricut machines that didn’t have a keyboard. It was a great machine but as soon as Cricut released the Cricut Explore machine in 2014, I quickly bought it. A year later Cricut released the Cricut Explore Air and I bought that too. Then in 2017, Cricut released the Cricut Maker Machine and of course I bought it too. So you can say I’m pretty experienced with Cricut machines and have in-depth knowledge about using Cricut and various Cricut projects.
