I was sharing a lot about the experience in my Instagram stories (when I had cell service) and this was a storm I’ll never forget. I thought I’d share a blog post and YouTube Video about our experience along with my top 10 tips to prepare for a hurricane in the future.

During the middle of the storm (after efforts to keep water out of the house and we lost power), my husband and I sat at our kitchen table with candlelight, listening to the radio inform us that it just made landfall, just 60 miles from our home. We watched out the window like it was our TV and the lightening would flash and light up the sky around the dark houses and you could see everything… along with the ominous noise of the wind blowing around us.

It was surreal to see all the trees uprooted, fences down, and flooded yards the next morning. But we are okay and our neighbors came together and we cleaned up the streets and our homes quickly.

Preparing for a hurricane can feel overwhelming, but with the right steps, you can ensure that you and your loved ones stay safe and sound.

Hurricane Tips

🌀Hurricane Preparedness Guide

  1. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on the weather reports and alerts. Download a reliable weather app or follow local news stations to get the latest updates. Knowledge is power!
  2. Create an Emergency Plan: Sit down with your family or housemates and design a plan. Decide on meeting spots, and evacuation routes, and make sure everyone knows what to do.
  3. Build an Emergency Kit: Gather essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications. Think of it as packing for a camping trip, but with safety in mind.
  4. Secure Your Home: Protect windows with storm shutters or plywood, and bring outdoor furniture inside or tie it in a secure area. A little effort now can prevent a lot of damage later.
  5. Know Your Evacuation Zone: Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes and know where your nearest shelter is. Being prepared means being ready to move if needed.
  6. Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and have a backup power source. Communication is crucial, so make sure you can reach out to loved ones and emergency services.
  7. Document Important Information: Keep copies of important documents like IDs, insurance papers, and medical records in a waterproof container. Peace of mind comes from being organized. Take before pictures and video of your home and belongings.
  8. Consider Special Needs: If you have pets, elderly family members, or individuals with special needs, plan accordingly. Make sure everyone has what they need to be comfortable and safe.
  9. Fuel Up: Fill your car’s gas tank well in advance. In case of an evacuation, you won’t want to be stuck in long lines at the gas station.
  10. Stay Positive and Support Each Other: Remember, you’re not alone. Reach out to neighbors, offer help, and accept support. Together, you can get through anything.

Preparing for a hurricane is all about taking proactive steps and staying positive. With these tips, you’re building a foundation of safety and community.

Top Tips After a Hurricane If You Lose Power

Experiencing a hurricane can be incredibly challenging, and losing power or dealing with flooding adds another layer of stress. But remember, you’re not alone, and together we can get through these tough times. Here are some top tips to help you stay safe and calm after a hurricane:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio handy to listen to updates and emergency information. Knowledge is power, and staying informed can help you make the best decisions for your safety.
  2. Check on Neighbors: Community is everything. Reach out to neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs. A simple check-in can mean the world to someone feeling isolated.
  3. Emergency Kit Essentials: Make sure your emergency kit has basics like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, and extra batteries. It’s all about staying prepared and having what you need close at hand.
  4. Document Damage: If it’s safe, take photos of any damage for insurance claims. This can make the process smoother and get you back on track more quickly.
  5. Stay Away from Floodwaters: Floodwaters can be dangerous, hiding debris or downed power lines. It’s best to avoid walking or driving through them. Safety first, always!
  6. Conserve Phone Battery: Use your phone sparingly to conserve battery life for important calls or messages. It’s a small step that can make a big difference in staying connected.
  7. Find a Safe Space: If your home is flooded, seek shelter with friends, family, or community shelters. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help.
  8. Stay Positive: It can be hard, but try to stay positive and look for the silver linings. Lean on friends, family, and community for support. You’ve got this!

Remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, but every step forward is progress. Stay safe, stay strong, and know that brighter days are ahead. W

Sadly, our neighbor had to remove the mango tree after Hurricane Milton (shown in our side yard below). That tree produced many mangos and shade in our side yard for 6+ years. It was also beautiful.
