Living Room Farmhouse Decor
Today I’m sharing 6 DIY Living Room Decor Ideas On A Budget and shopping tips to find the best deals at my favorite craft and home decor supplies store! I recently moved our formal living room into my former office area (which is the size of a small apartment) and desperately needed a room makeover. I found the best decorations and DIY supplies at Tuesday Morning and was able to totally transform our living room on a budget! Keep reading to learn some room refresh tips and watch the videos below with 6 DIY decor ideas!

Let’s get ready to plan a room refresh and makeover! I chose to update our Living Room decor with items found at Tuesday Morning 🙂
How To Do A Room Refresh and Room Makeover
Here’s what you need to do first…
Make A Plan
Decide your color scheme and what you want to update. For me, I already had large furniture pieces and a rug in the living room, so it was more about adding accessories, wall decor, and creating a theme. I knew I wanted a black and white color scheme with farmhouse style decorations. Keep your plan in mind as you shop but also keep in mind that you can always paint or change items you find in the store as I did below!
Start With A Blank Slate
I removed everything from the room except for the big, necessary items (the sofa, TV stand, TV, and rug). Everything else either found a new home, went in storage or was donated. Decluttering and starting with a blank slate will help you see what items you need to make the room refreshed and cozy.
Paint the walls if they are in bad shape or you want to refresh the color. I painted our living room in White Dove.
Budget Accordingly
I had a budget for this refresh so I ended up making a few items myself using craft supplies found at Tuesday Morning. I was able to find a small table, wall decor for both sides of the room, table decor, new pillows and throw blankets while staying under my budget. I repainted and stained a couple of the items from Tuesday Morning to match my decor too.
Take Your Time
Take your time shopping and shop in multiple stores. I saw a beautiful arched mirror at one Tuesday Morning store but didn’t purchase it because I wanted two and they only had one. Then I visited another Tuesday Morning store and they had the exact same mirror! The staff was kind enough to call the other store and put the mirror on hold so I could have 2 mirrors 🙂
Take your time shopping and deciding what will work well in the space. Hold onto your receipt in case you get home and realize you bought the wrong size area rug 🙁 Tuesday Morning also has some nooks and crannies where they store larger items. Look everywhere in the store!
Tips To Find The Best Deals at Tuesday Morning Stores
Follow these tips so you can go into your Tuesday Morning store with a strategy of knowing exactly what you are looking for and how to enjoy the hunt!
Perks Program
Did you know that Tuesday morning has a perks program? I love finding deals and the fact that Tuesday Morning offers a rewards program is a bonus on top of their already low prices for top quality items.
You can SAVE $10 by signing up for the Perks program in-store or online. You’ll also get private member-only discounts sent to your email throughout the year, and be registered for a $500 shopping spree. iPhone users can even add their Perks pass directly to their Apple Wallet, no need to print anything out or remember which email address you used.
A Tuesday Morning associate will always ask for your Perks program email at checkout and inform you if there are any coupons or rewards you can apply to your order (no need to print anything or show your phone at checkout!). I don’t know about you, but I hate having to hand over my phone to employees scan a digital coupon so I LOVE that Tuesday Morning coaches their employees to remind you about your rewards and coupons 😉
Shop the Clearance Aisle(s)
I’m lucky enough to have 2 Tuesday Morning stores located 5 minutes from my home. In one store, the clearance aisle is in the back of the store but they also had a clearance aisle in the front of the store near the seasonal items.
In the other store near my home, they had an entire room designated for clearance items! They have several large area rugs and more in this room and more home decor and craft supplies!
Start in the back of the store and work your way forward. Look for the clearance shelves at the back of the store for even bigger discounts on amazing finds. Clearance items are coded with colored stickers for 20, 40, and up to 60% off the already low prices.
Shop Tuesday Morning end-of-season sales to get a jump start and stock up for the next season. At Tuesday Morning, you’ll find incredible deals for up to 70% off what you’d pay at a specialty store.
Start Planning Seasonal Decor Early
Plan to shop for seasonal décor before peak seasons start. Some of the best and most unique seasonal décor items sell out way before the actual holiday. Tuesday Morning buyers source seasonal décor deals year-round—you can usually find Christmas decorations as early as September. Plan ahead and snag the most unique items that will make your friends jealous!
I started to slowly introduce Fall into my Living Room by adding some cotton stems and Buffalo Plaid Patterns. You can find these items at your local Tuesday Morning store! These floral stems start at $1.79!
Smell and Feel Everything!
Shop with your senses! Take the cap off that candle and smell it, touch the bamboo sheets to see how soft they are, and stand on that kitchen mat to see the difference it would make when doing a big load of dishes.
I couldn’t resist the candle aisle at Tuesday Morning stores! My favorite candles available at Tuesday Morning are James and Maria Organic Co. You’ll find seasonal candle scents like these available at your local Tuesday Morning.
One of my favorite James and Maria Organic Co. Fall and Winter scents is Oak Moss & Sage, which smells like Thanksgiving and Christmas!

I started by “trying on” the items I purchased from Tuesday Morning before proceeding with the DIY projects.

1. DIY Painted Iron Wall Plaque
I found this beautiful Green Iron Wall Plaque in the clearance section at Tuesday Morning. However, I didn’t want green in my living room refresh. I decided I would paint the wall plaque in black and white chalked paint and it turned out amazing! Check it out!
Supplies:
- Chalked Paint (linen)
- Chalked Paint (charcoal)
- Paint Brush
Instructions:
- Gather supplies.
- Use the chalked paint to create a distressed/worn look on the sign.
- Let dry and hang!
I love how this wall plaque turned out! The colors and pattern remind me of black and white Spanish tile (which is very popular currently). If you find this iron wall plaque at your local Tuesday Morning, grab it while you can!
2. Farmhouse Wall Sconce & Vase Holder on a Wooden Plank Sign
I found some natural wood planked signs in the craft aisle at Tuesday Morning and knew I could use them as signs above our sofa. It wasn’t until I got home that I decided to add some old farmhouse sconces and galvanized vases that this wall DIY came together. Watch the How-To video to see how to make these farmhouse wall signs!
Supplies:
- Briarwood Wood Stain
- Farmhouse Wall Sconces (mine are old, repurposed)
- Galvanized vase or flower pot (mine are old, repurposed)
- Screw Driver/screws
- Sawtooth hanger (I added one to my signs to easily hang them)
- Flowers for the vase (mine are from Tuesday Morning)
- Wood Planked Wall Signs
Instructions:
- Gather supplies.
- Stain the wood signs from Tuesday Morning.
- Use a screwdriver to attach the sconces to the wood signs.
- Attach lights at the top using a screwdriver.
- Attach sawtooth hanger to the back and hang.
LIGHTING TIP for sconces: these are not hard-wired into our electrical system. I used puck-lights, attached by wall-mounting tape to create a magic-light trick (inspired by Nesting With Grace).

3. Farmhouse Sign (with Replaceable Insert)
I saw some these Pocket Frames in the craft aisle at Tuesday Morning and I was going to get them but I already reached my budget, so I decided to make my own version using a picture frame from the Clearance section at Tuesday Morning stores and I think it turned out great! Watch the video below to see how easy it is to make this replaceable insert farmhouse sign!
Supplies:
- Wood Picture Frame from Tuesday Morning
- White Foam Board
- Painters tape or masking tape.
- Alphabet Sticker (or Thickers) from Tuesday Morning
Instructions:
- Gather supplies.
- Remove the insert of your picture frame and replace with the white foam board, cut to size.
- Use tape to attach the foam board to the picture frame.
- Add alphabet stickers to create a farmhouse sign. Have fun coming up with quotes and sayings because you can replace the white foam board to update your sign every season/holiday!
- I used a combination of black foam stickers and chipboard “thinkers” to create 2 inserts for my farmhouse sign. I plan to get more stickers from Tuesday Morning because this will be fun to update with Fall and Christmas colors/sayings!
- I used wall-mounting tape to attach to the iron plaque.

4. DIY Sharpie Shiplap
The biggest impact in my Living Room refresh was on the walls. With this easy DIY hack, I had shiplap walls in 20 minutes and didn’t cut a thing! I painted the walls with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove before adding the sharpie shiplap. Watch the video below to see a time-lapse of the shiplap walls and decor coming together!
Supplies:
- Black Sharpie Marker (make sure it’s never been used!)
- Level Tool
Instructions:
- Gather supplies.
- Measure and mark where your shiplap lines will go. Mine are 5.5 inches apart and I made small lines using m level to mark on the wall.
- Use the level to draw a level line across the mark you made.
- Repeat until the wall is covered.
- You can add lines in between the “boards” if you like but I didn’t.

5. DIY Stained Wooden Arrow
I found this cute little wooden arrow in the clearance section at Tuesday Morning. It is intended to hand pictures from it, but I decided to keep it simple by adding one of the Chipboard thickers stickers and staining it to match the rest of the room decor.
Supplies:
- Wooden Arrow Sign from Tuesday Morning
- Briarsmoke Wood Stain
- Thickers from Tuesday Morning
Instructions:
- Gather supplies.
- Stain the arrow using gloves, a sponge, and rag to wipe access stain. Let dry.
- Add your desired stickers.
- You can hang the arrow or sit it on a table as a display. I’ll probably hang mine above our TV later 😉
6. Sofa Table Upgrade
Have you ever stayed at a hotel with those cute little side tables that double as a workstation? They fit perfectly next to a comfy chair or the sofa and are highly functional. I’ve always wanted one so I was super excited when I found one at Tuesday Morning for $19.99! The top was wooden and painted in teal, black, and white but I upgraded it to match my color scheme. Check it out below!
Supplies:
- Sand block or Belt Sander (machine)
- Briarsmoke Wood Stain
Instructions:
- Gather supplies.
- Remove the top which is attached by screws (so the wooden piece is not connected to the legs).
- Sand down the top until you have a wood finish.
- Stain the wood using gloves, a sponge, and a rag to wipe the access stain. Let dry.
- Reattach the wood top to the legs.
Another DIY that I did to complete our Living Room transformation was to dry brush the large candle-stick holders on our TV stand. I found a large wooden candle holder in the clearance section at Tuesday Morning and found one that was already dry-brushed that was regular price. I decided to pair them together and used Linen Chalked Paint to dry brush the clearance candlestick so they matched. This technique gave the candlesticks the distressed look I was going for!
Don’t forget to pick up candles or battery-operated candles at Tuesday Morning! They have it all. I decided to use battery-operated candles with my candlesticks, however, I love the scented candles by James and Maria Organic Co. which you can find at Tuesday Morning stores 🙂
