DIY Dollar Tree Quilt
I made this patchwork quilt using Tea Towels and fat quarter fabric found at Dollar Tree! If you have basic sewing skills and a sewing machine, you can make this quilt as well! I had materials left over to make a matching patching envelope pillow cover too! Keep reading and watch the videos below to learn how to make this Dollar Tree Quilt Blanket and Pillow!
How do you make a simple patchwork quilt?
In this tutorial, I share how to make a simple patchwork quilt using Dollar Tree supplies. A patchwork quilt is a simple quilt for a beginner sewer and can be completed on the same day. Many quilters can create a patchwork quilt in less than an hour!
A patchwork quilt consists of “patches” of fabric that are sewn together to make the blanket.
What is the easiest quilt to make?
A quilt with all the same size squares is the easiest quilt to make for beginners. Once you get the hang of the square shape, then you can make other cuts and designs for quilts.
What do I need for a patchwork quilt?
I used tea towels, hand towels, and fat quarter fabric from Dollar Tree to make this throw quilt. I also used a sewing machine, batting, and an old sheet. The rest of the supplies are listed below but I highly recommend a rotary cutter and cutting mat to make your quilt fabric cutting easier.
How do you make quilt squares?
You can use a quilter’s square as a guide to cut quilt squares. You can also use a template you find online or a cutting mat with the shape and size you want.
How to Make a Patchwork Quilt using Tea Towels and Hand Towels
I stocked up on all the pretty towels from Dollar Tree to make this fun quilt! You can use bandanas and other fat quarter fabrics from Dollar Tree if you can’t find these exact towels.
Supplies:
- Tea Towels/Fat Quarters/Scrap Fabric
- Quilter’s Square or Template
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Pins
- Scissors
- Flat Sheet or large piece of fabric
- Batting
- Sewing Machine
- Coordinating Thread
- Bias Tape
Directions:
- Gather supplies. Watch the videos below for more instructions.
- Use the Quilter’s Square to cut several squares from the fabric.
- Arrange the squares on a table or the floor to achieve your desired pattern.
- Pin all the squares together.
- Use a sewing machine to sew all the squares together.
- Place the flat sheet on a table of the floor, then place the batting on top of the sheet, then place the finished squares on top of the batting (like a sandwich).
- Use pins to attach the finished squares to the batting and flat sheet.
- Sew a pattern or sew along the edges of each square through the thick fabrics.
- Finish by sewing the edges of the blanket.
- Trim the edges and sew bias tape around the edge to finish the blanket. You can make your own bias tape as I did or use a premade bis tape like this one.
- Follow the same steps to make the patchwork pillow front only skip the batting and you will sew two pieces of fabric to the back to create an envelope pillow opening.
Wrap up about Dollar Tree Quilt
This DIY patchwork quilt is a great beginner sewing project. If you can find the materials you need at Dollar Tree you can make a beautiful Tea Towel quilt for very little money. I would love to make this again in other seasonal colors to use as a picnic or beach blanket. I hope you enjoyed learning how to make a patchwork quilt and pillow cover!
