Dollar Tree Blanket Ladder
If you’ve seen those farmhouse ladders used for various home decor ideas, you probably know how much rustic ladders cost in high-end decor stores. I got lucky and found a large antique ladder at a yard sale but I wanted an extra farmhouse ladder to use as a planter outside so I made my own! The best part about this DIY farmhouse ladder is that it’s made using items for less than a few dollars! This ladder was so easy that I made a mini tea towel ladder (yes, tea towel ladders are a thing!) for just $3! Keep reading to learn how to make a DIY Dollar Store Farmhouse Ladder for less than $3!
In this tutorial, you will learn how to make THREE different Farmhouse Ladders.
- Small Tea Towel Ladder
- Medium Decorative Ladder
- Large Blanket Ladder
You can use all of these ladders to display small, lightweight blankets and more. I also share how to add Dollar Tree baskets to your ladders to make a Farmhouse Ladder planter or a home organizing system.
There are 3 Different Ladder Tutorials in this post.
Please note: if you spray paint your baskets and plan to store food items in the baskets to make sure your spray paint is food safe.
How To Make a Rustic Blanket Ladder :
Supplies:
- Paint Sticks (for the tea towel ladder)
- 5-Gallon Paint Sticks (for the tea towel ladder)
- Paint Sticks (for the large ladder)
- 5-Gallon Paint Sticks (for the large ladder)
- Hand Saw
- Paint or Wood Stain
- Tacky Glue or Wood Glue
Directions:
- Gather Supplies. I used a handsaw to cut the curved edge off the paint sticks but I have a follower that messaged me with the ladder that she built and she didn’t cut off the edges and it still looked good.
- To Make the $3 Tea Towel Ladder: You need 2 packages of 5-gallon paint sticks (6 large paint sticks total), 1 package of regular size paint sticks (10 sticks total), Aleene’s tacky glue, Paint or Wood Stain, and a hand saw. Watch this quick video for more help.
- Use the hand saw to cut off the curved edges of all the paint sticks.
- Use tacky glue to glue 5 small sticks together and glue 3 large sticks together and let dry. You should have 4 total pieces (2 legs and 2 middle bars).
- Use tacky glue to glue the middle bars to the legs. Make sure to use a level and ruler so the ladder is not lopsided or higher on one end than the other. Let the glue dry.
- Paint or stain the tea towel ladder and you’re done!
- To Make the $6 Farmhouse Ladder: You need 4 packages of 5-gallon paint sticks (12 large paint sticks total), 2 packages of regular size paint sticks (20 sticks total), Aleene’s tacky glue, Paint or Wood Stain, and a hand saw. Watch this quick video for more help.
- Cut the curved edge off the small paint sticks ONLY.
- Glue 5 small paint sticks together to make 4 total “bars” for the middle of the ladder.
- Glue 3 large paint sticks together to make 4 total “legs” for the ladder.
- Attach 2 of the legs together using tacky glue to make one long leg. I also glued a large paint stick to the back of the long legs (where they met) as a support piece.
- Glue the 4 bars to the legs, measuring to make sure the legs are level and each bar is an equal distance apart.
- Let the glue dry completely before painting or staining.
- To Make the Basket Farmhouse Ladder: You need 4 small rectangle baskets, spray paint (optional), zip ties. Watch this quick video for more help.
- I spray painted some Dollar Tree baskets with black spray paint to get the farmhouse look.
- Use black zip ties to attach the baskets to your DIY farmhouse ladder.
- Add labels to the front to use as a mail sorting system or leave simple and use as a farmhouse ladder planter.
