DIY Couples Scarecrow Costumes
Every Halloween, I love creating costumes that are budget-friendly, comfortable, and creative—and this year, our DIY Couples Scarecrow Costumes checked all the boxes! 👩🌾👨🌾 The best part? Almost everything came straight from our closets (or the thrift store for a few dollars). With just a chambray dress, a plaid flannel, and a Dollar Tree raffia for the straw effect, we pulled together an adorable farm-fresh look without sewing a single stitch. If you’re looking for a no-sew, last-minute Halloween idea, or just want something comfortable (goodbye itchy store-bought costumes 🙅♀️), this tutorial is for you.
Let’s jump into the supplies, steps, and styling tips that made these costumes a Halloween hit! 🎃

Step-By-Step: DIY Cute Scarecrow Costume for Her
- Start with the Base:
Put on your chambray dress—it’s the perfect “farmer’s daughter” foundation that feels both cute and rustic. - Make Your Patches:
Cut small squares/rectangles from the flannel sleeves and burlap scraps. Mix them for a patchwork look. Safety pin them onto your dress in random spots (skirt, sides, even the back). - Add Straw (aka Hula Skirt Strips):
Trim strands of the Dollar Tree hula skirt and pin them inside your dress hemline, sleeve cuffs, and neckline so they peek out. Instant “stuffed scarecrow” effect! I couldn’t find hula skirts so I used raffia from my craft stash. I made mini tassels of straw. - Collar Overlay Hack:
Since my hubby needed the actual shirt collar for his outfit, I cut triangles from the flannel sleeves and pinned them under my neckline to mimic a layered flannel collar. - Accessorize:
Add a rope belt around the waist, tuck in a sunflower (optional), and slip into beige boots. - Makeup Magic:
- Rosy pink cheeks (lots of blush!)
- Orange triangle nose with eyeliner or face paint
- Stitched smile drawn with eyeliner
Top It Off:
A straw hat completes the look. Pin a few straw strands under the brim so they hang like “straw hair.”
Step-By-Step: DIY Muscular Scarecrow Costume for Him
- Jeans + Flannel:
Start with ripped/distressed jeans and the flannel shirt. Roll sleeves or cut them off to show off muscles 💪. - Patchwork Details:
Use leftover burlap/flannel to create patches pinned onto his jeans and shirt. - Stuff With Straw:
Pin hula skirt bundles into armholes, pant cuffs, and neckline. A little goes a long way! - Suspenders & Boots:
Classic scarecrow style. Add suspenders if he has them, then finish with work boots. - Hat + Makeup:
A straw hat ties it all together. For makeup, keep it simple: stitched smile, faint cheek blush, optional eyeliner “stitches” on biceps (fun detail).
Couples Styling Tips 🌟
- Match Your Patches: Use the same flannel + burlap scraps on both outfits to look cohesive.
- Props: She can carry a basket with faux corn or sunflowers. He can carry a pitchfork, rake, or even a toy crow for laughs.
- Comfort Factor: Since everything is pinned, you can adjust throughout the night. And you won’t be itching from real straw.
