Creative Last-Minute Couples Costumes You Can Make at Home

Halloween sneaks up on us every year, doesn’t it? 🎃 One minute you’re setting out your fall porch decor, and the next your kids remind you there’s a costume party tonight. No worries, mama—I’ve got you covered! These creative last-minute couples costumes are fun, easy, and can be put together with items you probably already have at home (or can grab on a quick Dollar Tree/Target run). Keep reading to see these Creative Couples Costumes You Can Make at Home!

DIY Rock Star Couples Costume – Axl Rose & Slash

When I say “couples costumes,” I don’t just mean romantic pairs. These ideas are perfect for:

  • Husband + wife/partners
  • Mother + son or daughter
  • Father + daughter or son
  • Even siblings or best friends who want to dress up together

Whether you’re going for cute, funny, or iconic, these DIY ideas will save the day—and get you all the compliments at your Halloween get-together.

❄️ Anna & Kristoff from Frozen

Perfect for: Mom + son, daughter + dad, or a couple.

Kristoff Costume: My hubby wore jeans, snow boots, a beanie and I took one his old fleece sweaters (he was going to donate it), cut off the sleeves, glued fur trim, and sewed red felt tot he chest and the bottom to create Kristoff’s outfit.

Anna Costume: I took an old black tank top and used puff paint to create the design on Anna’s dress. I had a blue maxi skirt and tied a gold ribbon around the waist. I used pink curtains (these were from my daughter’s bedroom when she outgrew pink!) and a ribbon through the top to wear as a cape! I used the curtain fabric to make a bonnet. I used teal felt to make mittens and double braided my hair to complete the look.

Supplies:

  • Blue dress (Anna) + vest and boots
  • Brown pants, boots, and fur-trimmed vest (Kristoff)
  • Optional: Stuffed reindeer (Sven 🦌)

Why it works: Frozen is a family favorite. A mom/daughter can be Anna while dad or son rocks a Kristoff look.

🎮 Super Mario Bros. (Mario & Luigi)

Perfect for: Any duo—siblings, friends, or parent + child. We used clothes we already owned, and I made it cute with knee-high striped socks and Converse sneakers. Get the Super Mario Bros. accessories we used in our photo here!

Supplies:

  • Blue overalls or jeans + suspenders or Blue Dress
  • Red shirt & cap (Mario) / Green shirt & cap (Luigi)
  • White gloves + felt “M” or “L” on hats

Why it works: Recognizable, fun, and hilarious when paired as mom/son or dad/daughter too!

🎤 Axl Rose & Slash from Guns N’ Roses

Perfect for: Couples or older kids with a parent who loves rock. Shop the accessories to create this look here!

Axl Costume: I already owned the items I’m wearing so it was easy to put this together. Plus my hair was highlighted to be almost the same color as Axl’s. I went for the iconic outfit Axl wore on the Use Your Illusion Tour in the 90’s – white short shorts, a band tee, red flannel tied at the waist, red bandana, rocker hand signs, temporary tattoos, white socks with stripes, and combat boots.

Slash Costume: A black top hat and a wig (and Axl by your side) is all you need to pull of this Slash look. My hubby wore a black tee and jeans with black sneakers. I used cardstock cutouts to make the hat look more like Slash and he wore aviators to complete the look.

Supplies for Axl: Bandana, white shorts, Guns N’ Roses Tee, plaid shirt, sunglasses
Supplies for Slash: Wig, hat, toy guitar, leather jacket

Why it works: These music icons are instantly recognizable and give off fun, rocker energy.

🤡 Cute & Funny Clowns

Perfect for: Parent + child or traditional couples. I made a YouTube Video here sharing all the details for this couples costume.

Cute Boy Clown: My son wore my hubby’s red shorts (of course, they were huge on him – perfect for the clown look!), Dollar Tree socks in a funny pattern, red crocs (these we got for $5 thrifting!), red suspenders and bow tie over a basic white tee. He did his own makeup to complete the look!

Cute Mom Clown: My red dress is a little girl’s holiday dress from Target (Cat & Jack) that I found for $1 thrifting! I had to cut the inside bodice to fit it and added a black tulle skirt underneath to add length. I made a clown collar by tying strips of Dollar Tree tulle to a ribbon and tying it around my neck. I made little ribbon bows and safety pinned them to the front of the dress (I didn’t want anything permanent because a good red dress can be used for many other costumes!)

I tied red pom pom ribbon around my legs with the black and white striped socks and stuck a red pom pom in my boots. I purchased a cute top hat at Spirit of Halloween ($7), red hair clips ($2), and did my hair in 2 high pig tails, with matching red and black clown-themed press-on nails ($7).  For makeup, I used red lipstick on my nose and lips, fake eyelashes, and black eyeliner above and below my eyes. My homemade cute clown costume was under $17 total!

Supplies:

  • Mismatched clothes, suspenders
  • Face paint or lipstick nose
  • Colorful wigs or bow ties (DIY with Cricut or felt)

Why it works: Lighthearted, kid-friendly, and easy to customize with what you have at home.

🏦 Bank Robbers

Perfect for: Husband + wife, mom + daughter, or dad + son. Look in your closet and I bet you have a black and white striped shirt, black pants, and a black beanie. For the mask, I cut black felt and attached ribbon on the sides. I used a Sharpie to draw a dollar sign on a Dollar Tree canvas bag.

Supplies:

  • Black pants + shirt
  • Black beanie
  • Bag with a big dollar sign (DIY with Cricut vinyl or felt)

Why it works: Simple, quick, and fun for adults or kids. Bonus points if you add toy handcuffs.

🦇 Batman & Robin

Perfect for: Dad + son, mom + daughter, or traditional couples.

Batman Shirt: I made a stencil with my cricut machine and stenciled the Batman logo on a black shirt. My hubby wore a batman mask to complete the look.

Robin Outfit: I dressed as Robin and used my Cricut machine to cut the Robin logo and shapes using felt and glued it to my shirt. I made tulle skirts by tying thick strips of tulle around a ribbon and tied the ribbon around my waist and wore it over leggings and boots.

Bonus:

Wonder Woman Outfit: I made this for my daughter using my Cricut and glitter iron-on for the shirt. I used my Cricut to cut the crown and cuffs using gold cardstock. I attached elastic on them so she could easily get them on and off. I used red glitter cardstock for the star details and made her a tulle skirt to match mine. She wore red rain boots to finish the look.

Supplies:

  • Black tee + mask (Batman)
  • Red or green shirt + yellow belt (Robin)
  • DIY cape (old pillowcase works!)

Why it works: A timeless superhero duo! Kids love being Robin while parents go full Batman.

🤠 Beth Dutton & Rip Wheeler from Yellowstone

Perfect for: Power Couples if you want a western vibe.

Rip costume: This was the year my hubby decided to grow a beard, so he pulled this look off easily! He found a black cowboy hat thrifting, wore my dad’s old belt buckle (my dad loved dressing in Western styles!), a black button-down shirt, and black dress shoes (black cowboy boots would’ve been better but it worked!). He wore aviator glasses to complete the look.

Beth’s costume: Look in your closet for a slutty dress, lol – I wore a little black dress (see more LBD Halloween costume ideas in this post), western-style boots, I wore a blonde wig with costume accessories (hat and jacket). I also used a cigarette as a prop, along with a cocktail glass.

In the picture below, we sat in front of our shed like it was The Bunkhouse.

Supplies for Beth:

  • Black dress or something bold and fierce
  • Leopard print jacket
  • Cowboy boots
  • Cowboy hat
  • Loose waves or tousled hair, plus dark eyeliner

Supplies for Rip:

  • Black button-up shirt
  • Blue jeans + cowboy boots
  • Black cowboy hat
  • Sunglasses (Rip’s signature look)

Why it works: This duo is instantly recognizable and gives off a tough, western vibe. Best part? You probably have most of these pieces already in your closet. Bonus points if you carry around a toy whiskey bottle or lasso for props.

💀 Skeleton Pajamas (Couples or Family Costume)

Perfect for: Couples, parent + child duos, or the entire family.

Skeleton PJs: This is one family or couple’s Halloween costume that is worth it to purchase. My hubby and I wear ours every year (sadly, our kids outgrew theirs already) but I’m so glad we took pictures in these matching pjs – it’s one to remember!

Supplies:

  • Matching skeleton pajamas (easy to find at Target, Walmart, Amazon, or even DIY with black PJs + white fabric paint or Cricut iron-on vinyl)
  • Optional: Face paint to add a spooky skeleton look
  • Add glow-in-the-dark details for extra fun at night

Why it works: This is the ultimate last-minute Halloween costume—you can order PJs or grab a pair locally, and you’re ready to go. It’s cozy, photogenic, and works for the whole family if you want to match as a group.

🎃 DIY Scarecrow Couple

Perfect for: Anyone who loves cozy fall vibes, easy DIY projects, or nostalgic farm-inspired costumes. 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾 This costume is great for couples or families who want something comfortable, budget-friendly, and adorable for Halloween.

Her Costume:
I used a chambray dress I already owned as the base and paired it with a $10 Walmart flannel shirt. I cut the sleeves off the flannel to use the fabric for patches and details. Instead of using a Dollar Tree hula skirt (I couldn’t find one this time of year), I used raffia from my craft stash for the “straw” peeking out at the sleeves and hem. I added buttons for extra charm, pinned up the dress a little to show a lace extender underneath, and used a rope belt with a big sunflower accent. For accessories, I made straw cuff “bracelets,” a straw hat with rope trim and a bow, and I’m deciding between beige boots or Mary Jane flats—with lace bows tied around my legs for extra cuteness.

His Costume:
My hubby wore jeans and the rest of the flannel shirt, with burlap and flannel patches pinned to his clothes. I tucked faux corn into his shirt pocket and added raffia around the cuffs for that stuffed-scarecrow look. He paired it with boots, and we might add a pitchfork for fun while I carry a little basket of fake corn.

  • 👗 For Her (Cute Scarecrow):
    • Short sleeve chambray dress
    • Flannel shirt (share with his costume)
    • Burlap scraps
    • Raffia pieces for straw
    • Rope belt
    • Straw hat
    • Beige boots orBeige Mary Jane Flats
    • Makeup: rosy blush, eyeliner for stitched smile, orange nose

    👕 For Him (Muscular Scarecrow):

    • Distressed jeans
    • Suspenders (optional, but adds a classic scarecrow vibe)
    • Burlap/flannel patches
    • Dollar Tree hula skirt or Raffia pieces for straw
    • Work boots
    • Straw/cowboy hat

    ✂️ Tools:

    • Scissors
    • Safety pins (LOTS—this whole project is no-sew!)
    • Cordless Hot glue Gun

Why It Works:
This classic fall duo is instantly recognizable, cozy, and perfect for fall festivals or trick-or-treating. It’s completely no-sew, made with items you probably already own, and cost us under $10 total! It’s cute, comfy, and easy to take apart after Halloween so you can reuse your clothes. 🌻

🕒 Quick Tips for Last-Minute Costumes

  • Work with what you have. Closet basics go a long way.
  • Cricut to the rescue. Cut logos or details from vinyl or cardstock.
  • Think beyond romance. Parent/child duos can pull off any of these just as well as couples.
