Create a Festive FA LA LA Sign for Your Exterior Christmas Décor
Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
- Pre-cut 12″ plywood letters spelling “FA LA LA” (available at most craft stores)
- Paint in your choice of colors (red, green, gold, or any festive color)
- Paintbrushes or foam brushes
- Clear outdoor sealant or water-based polyurethane
- Pipe Cleaners (if attaching to trellis like I did)
- Staple Gun
- Optional: Decorative embellishments (glitter, bows, ribbons)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Paint the Letters
Use a paintbrush or foam brush to apply your chosen paint color to the letters. Be sure to paint the edges as well as the front surfaces for a uniform look. Depending on the paint and color, you may need to apply multiple coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
Step 2: Add Embellishments (Optional)
While your painted letters dry, consider adding some festive embellishments. You can sprinkle glitter over the wet paint for a sparkling effect or attach bows and ribbons for a playful touch. Be sure to choose weather-resistant decorations to maintain the longevity of your sign. I kept mine simple with bright red paint.
Step 3: Seal the Letters
Once your paint and embellishments are fully dry, apply a clear outdoor sealant to protect your letters from the elements. This step is crucial to ensure that your sign remains vibrant and intact throughout the season although I skipped this step, I know I can always repaint it next year! Allow the sealant to dry as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 4: Assemble and Install
Decide where you want to display your FA LA LA sign. Measure the area to ensure proper spacing and alignment of the letters. I used large popsicle sticks to attach the “F” and the “A” together and so on. If you’re attaching them to a wall or fence, use screws or pipe cleaner to secure each letter in place. Alternatively, if you’re placing the letters on a flat surface, use heavy-duty adhesive for a strong hold.
Step 5: Enjoy Your Creation
Once your sign is installed, step back and admire your handiwork! The vibrant colors and festive message are sure to spread holiday joy to everyone who passes by.
Tips for Success
- Weatherproofing: Make sure all materials used are suitable for outdoor use to prevent damage from rain or snow.
- Color Coordination: Choose paint colors that complement the rest of your holiday décor for a cohesive look.
- Safety First: If using a ladder to install your sign, ensure it is stable and secure.
More Creative Ideas to Use These Wood Letters
I couldn’t decide if I wanted to spell “JOLLY” or ” FA LA LA” so I purchased 9 letters to spell FA LA LA and JOY but I can scramble them to spell JOLLY if I want to another year! I placed the JOY letters on a blank white sign in our family room.

Creating a FA LA LA sign is a fun and creative way to personalize your holiday decorations. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or trying your hand at crafting for the first time, this project is sure to bring joy and festive spirit to your home. Happy decorating!
