First, let’s gather our supplies: I have one peppermint hanger that cost $1.25 and four packs of styrofoam balls from Dollar Tree, specifically the 2.3-inch size (look for the three-pack). Dollar Tree also offers various sizes, including smaller packs of four. You’ll need some fishing line as well, and I picked up a package of red ornaments from Dollar Tree. Alternatively, you could paint one of your styrofoam balls red, but I found the ornament package to be a better value. An upholstery needle with a curved tip works well, but any long upholstery needle that fits through the styrofoam balls and ornaments will do. I’m using a 4-inch upholstery needle, which fits just fine.

Once you have everything unwrapped, cut a piece of fishing line—my garland ended up being 6.5 feet long, but leave some extra length for easier handling. Start threading the styrofoam balls onto the fishing line. I laid out a pattern for my garland: a large peppermint, two white balls, one red ornament, and then two white balls, repeating that design. The cool part about these peppermints is that they come with little hooks on each side, making it easy to string the fishing line through. For the ornaments, I chose glitter ones, but be prepared for some glitter mess; Dollar Tree also offers plain red ornaments if you prefer those.

Using the hammer, I gently tapped to create holes in the ornaments, allowing me to thread the fishing line through. I continued with my pattern, threading the large peppermint directly through its holes. If you want a double-sided look for the peppermints, you can glue two together, but keep in mind that once hung, the backside won’t be visible. For the end of the garland, I added a red pom-pom to secure the knot and keep it in place. I simply tied a loop with a knot at the end.
