We took an Alaskan cruise last month and I’m finally sharing all the details on the blog! This was a bucket list trip and involved a lot of planning over a year. This was our 9th cruise as a family and was the BEST vacation we’ve ever taken! I share secrets for each Alaska port to experience the breathtaking views and magic of Alaska.
What to expect from an Alaskan cruise in summer?
One of the highlights of an Alaskan cruise is the opportunity to experience the majestic wildlife in its natural habitat. As your Royal Caribbean ship sails through the Inside Passage, you may spot humpback whales breaching, orcas playing, and sea lions lounging on rocky shores. Is summer good for an Alaska cruise?
Summer is an excellent time for an Alaska cruise, offering a plethora of advantages that make it a standout choice for travelers. First and foremost, the weather during the summer months, typically from May to September, is quite favorable. Daytime temperatures often range between 50°F and 70°F, providing a comfortable climate for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The extended daylight hours, especially in June and July, give you more time to explore the breathtaking landscapes, from towering glaciers to lush forests, without feeling rushed.
In addition to the pleasant weather, summer cruises to Alaska offer unparalleled opportunities to experience the region’s extraordinary wildlife. This is the prime season for spotting humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and a variety of bird species, including the iconic bald eagle.
Moreover, summer is also a festival season in Alaska, adding a cultural dimension to your cruise experience. Packing for an Alaska Cruise During Summer
The most stressful part of planning for our Alaska cruise was packing. We live in Florida with school-aged kids who do not have Winter gear or rainy-weather wearables. Florida doesn’t have mountains to hike so we don’t own hiking shoes or boots. I was stressing about if we needed snow pants and snow boots or rain jackets and waterproof shoes… there is a HUGE difference in an Alaska Winter wardrobe and an Alaska Summer wardrobe!
What I learned from our experience is to pack layers and waterproof is better than winter-proof. Our friends went to Alaska 2 weeks before us and they experienced wet, cold days. However, we experienced ZERO rain and sunny days, reaching up to 60 degrees. I would start the day wearing a winter hat and winter coat, but by lunch, I could get away with wearing a long-sleeved shirt and trade the snow hat for sunglasses.

On board the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the luxury and comfort are unparalleled. My kid’s favorite amenity on the Ovation of the Seas Royal Caribbean cruise was the SeaPlex. The SeaPlex on the Ovation of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, is a revolutionary entertainment complex that offers an array of thrilling activities for guests of all ages. As one of the largest indoor active spaces at sea, it’s designed to provide endless fun and excitement. The SeaPlex transforms throughout the day to accommodate various activities, ensuring there’s always something new to try. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or looking for family-friendly fun, the SeaPlex has something to offer.
During the day, guests can enjoy a game of basketball or soccer on the full-size sports court, or challenge friends and family to a friendly competition of bumper cars, which is a unique feature not commonly found on cruise ships. Additionally, there are roller skating sessions, complete with disco lights and music, that transport guests back to the golden age of roller rinks.
Our favorite was the Bumper Cars in the SeaPlex! The bumper cars are a standout feature, allowing guests to indulge in the fun and excitement typically found at a fairground, all while cruising on the open ocean. Imagine the thrill of navigating a fleet of colorful bumper cars, each equipped with safety features to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride. Our Royal Caribbean cruise began in Seattle, Washington. I highly recommend an Alaska cruise out of Seattle if you are from the U.S. because it makes it easier to avoid customs if you go out of Vancouver.

Seattle, Washington Cruise Port
Seattle, Washington, is a bustling port city with a lot to offer cruise passengers both before and after their voyages. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Space Needle, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city and Puget Sound. The Seattle Center, where the Space Needle is located, also houses the Museum of Pop Culture and the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit, showcasing the stunning glasswork of artist Dale Chihuly. These attractions are great for getting a feel for the city’s unique artistic and cultural vibe.
Another must-visit location is Pike Place Market, one of the oldest continuously operated public markets in the United States. Here, you can experience the vibrant atmosphere of local vendors selling fresh seafood, produce, artisanal goods, and crafts. Don’t miss the famous fish-throwing fishmongers or the original Starbucks store. The market also offers a variety of dining options, making it a perfect spot to enjoy some local flavors.
We flew into Seattle the day before our cruise in case of flight delays, which gave us extra time to explore the city. I’ve always wanted to explore Seattle so we stayed downtown, within walking distance to the Space Needle and Pike Place. We stopped in several restaurants and Beer Halls to taste local breweries and food. The Daily Dozen’s Donut Shop in Pike Place and Queen Anne’s Beer Hall were among my favorites. The Fresh Flower Market in Pike Place had gorgeous flowers, fresh off the boat for cheap prices! I wanted so badly to take a flower bouquet on the cruise but I wasn’t sure they would allow it… I found out later that many people bring fresh flowers to keep in their staterooms…which is good to know for next time!
For those interested in history and maritime culture, the Seattle waterfront is a fantastic area to explore. You can visit the Seattle Aquarium, take a scenic harbor cruise, or even ride the Seattle Great Wheel for spectacular views of the bay. If you have more time, consider a trip to the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) or the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park to delve deeper into Seattle’s rich history. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, Seattle’s cruise port offers a diverse array of activities to suit all interests.
Bainbridge Island, Washington
Whether you’re visiting for a day trip or an extended stay, Bainbridge Island has something to offer everyone. The ferry ride itself is an experience, providing a serene transition from the urban environment to the natural beauty of the island. With its combination of quaint charm, outdoor activities, and cultural attractions, Bainbridge Island is a must-visit destination for anyone in the Seattle area.
On the final day of our cruise, we disembarked the ship around 9 am and our flight wasn’t until 9 pm so we had extra time to visit Bainbridge Island before heading home. We took an Uber back to the hotel we stayed at a week earlier and they held our carry-on bags so we could explore the city with fewer items to carry. Royal Caribbean has a luggage valet service and we had our large suitcases sent directly to the airport so we only had our carry-on bags to worry about. We walked to Pike Place and the waterfront to catch the ferry over to Bainbridge.
Taking the ferry to Bainbridge Island in Seattle, Washington, is a delightful experience that offers more than just a means of transportation. The journey begins at the Seattle Ferry Terminal, located on the waterfront in downtown Seattle. As you board the ferry, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of the Seattle skyline, including the iconic Space Needle and the bustling waterfront. The ferry ride itself is approximately 35 minutes, during which you can relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of Puget Sound. The waters are often dotted with sailboats, and you might even catch a glimpse of wildlife such as seals or orcas.
Upon arriving at Bainbridge Island, you’ll find a charming, small-town atmosphere that feels worlds away from the urban hustle of Seattle. Winslow, the main town on the island, is just a short walk from the ferry terminal. Here, you’ll find an array of boutique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. The island is also home to several wineries and tasting rooms, making it a great destination for wine aficionados. For those interested in nature, Bainbridge Island offers numerous parks and trails, including the beautiful Bloedel Reserve, a 150-acre public garden, and forest preserve.
Sitka, Alaska Cruise Port
Sitka, Alaska, is a picturesque port town that offers a wealth of activities for cruise passengers looking for quick, enriching experiences. One of the top things to do is to visit the Sitka National Historical Park. This park is not only the oldest national park in Alaska but also home to a fascinating collection of totem poles and lush forest trails. Visitors can explore the park’s serene beauty and learn about the rich Tlingit culture and history that shaped the area.
Another must-see is the Alaska Raptor Center, which is dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured birds of prey. A visit here offers a unique opportunity to see bald eagles up close and learn about the crucial conservation efforts in place to protect these majestic creatures. The center’s knowledgeable staff provide engaging tours and insights into the lives and recovery processes of these birds, making it a memorable stop for nature enthusiasts.
Lastly, take a stroll through Sitka’s charming downtown area. The quaint streets are lined with local shops, art galleries, and historic buildings, including the iconic St. Michael’s Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church that stands as a testament to Sitka’s Russian heritage. Along the way, you can sample fresh seafood at local eateries or simply enjoy the stunning waterfront views.
We took a quick shuttle bus from the Sikta port to get into town. We did not have any excursions planned in Sitka and went into town for shopping and eating! Although we were told of many hiking trails nearby, we enjoyed the small town and sampled Alaskan King Crab Chowder at Fisherman’s Alley (it’s literally a table in an alley but so good), and Alaska Pure Sea Salt Company (salt made using only water from Sitka Sound with no additives or added chemicals).
Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or just looking for a relaxing walk, Sitka’s downtown offers something for everyone.
Skagway, Alaska Cruise Port
Skagway, Alaska, a popular cruise port, is a gateway to the natural beauty and rich history of the Last Frontier. One of the most iconic experiences is a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad. This historic narrow-gauge railway takes you on a breathtaking journey through scenic landscapes, including rugged mountains, cascading waterfalls, and deep gorges. The train ride provides a glimpse into the region’s gold rush history and offers stunning photo opportunities at every turn.
For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, Skagway offers numerous hiking trails that cater to different skill levels. The Chilkoot Trail is particularly famous, tracing the steps of gold prospectors from the late 1800s. It’s a challenging hike that rewards trekkers with panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment. Alternatively, the Dewey Lake Trail System offers a variety of shorter hikes that take you through lush forests and alongside serene lakes, perfect for a day of exploration and wildlife spotting.
In addition to its natural wonders, Skagway’s charming downtown area is worth a visit. The town is filled with restored buildings from the gold rush era, now housing quaint shops, museums, and eateries. The Skagway Museum provides a deep dive into the town’s history, while the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park offers guided tours and exhibits detailing the lives of those who flocked to the area in search of fortune. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or simply soaking in the unique Alaskan atmosphere, Skagway has something to offer every visitor.
Skagway was my favorite port in Alaska! We planned a bike excursion on the Chilkoot Trail but we had time to explore the town and grab something to eat beforehand. We stopped at the Skagway Brewing Company and sampled the Alaska Brewery along with Crab Chowder and Halibut Fish and Chips (everything was delicious!).
The Sockeye Cycle Bike Company led our excursion with our family of 4 and another family of 4. We took a van deep into Alaska and rode our bikes on the Chilkoot Trail, learning about the history and landmarks. The air was so clean and the views were breathtaking!
After our excursion, we had time go on the Train Ride (everyone said we should experience that!) but our kids were hungry and tired from biking so we went back to the Skagway Brewing Company and ordered the same food and beer (it was that good to eat there again in one day!). We did some shopping before returning to the ship. The town was picturesque!
Endicott Arms & Dawes Glacier
Endicott Arms and Dawes Glacier is an unforgettable adventure that combines the stunning beauty of nature with the luxury and comfort of a world-class cruise line. As you sail through the pristine waters of the Alaskan wilderness, you will be surrounded by breathtaking landscapes that include towering mountains, lush forests, and icy blue glaciers. The journey to Endicott Arm, a fjord located in the Tongass National Forest, is particularly remarkable. Here, you can witness the majestic Dawes Glacier, a massive river of ice that stretches over 600 feet high and 1 mile wide, slowly carving its way through the rugged terrain.
I spent 3 hours on the cruise ship deck while we slowly navigated through the glaciers. The view was spectacular and I was outside in the cold with my binoculars soaking up every bit of it! I have never seen anything like it in my life and I didn’t want to leave! We were surrounded by waterfalls, caves, teal water, melting icebergs, and snow-peaked mountains. I took the most pictures and videos while we were at the glacier and the colors were so vibrant that you don’t need to edit photos or add a filter.

Juneau, Alaska Cruise Port
Juneau, Alaska, is a captivating cruise port that offers a plethora of activities for visitors seeking adventure, culture, and natural beauty. As the state capital, Juneau is rich in history and surrounded by stunning landscapes, making it an ideal destination for cruise ship passengers.
One must-see attraction is the Mendenhall Glacier, a breathtaking natural wonder located just 13 miles from downtown Juneau. Visitors can explore the glacier up close by hiking the numerous trails in the area, such as the popular Nugget Falls Trail, which leads to an impressive waterfall. For a more exhilarating experience, consider booking a guided tour that allows you to trek on the glacier or even take a helicopter ride for a bird’s-eye view of the icy expanse.
Another quintessential Juneau experience is taking a ride on the Mount Roberts Tramway. This aerial tramway transports passengers from the cruise port to the 1,800-foot level of Mount Roberts, offering panoramic views of the city, Gastineau Channel, and surrounding mountains. At the top, visitors can enjoy hiking trails, a nature center, and even a cultural center where they can learn about the indigenous Tlingit people through exhibits and performances.
We did not plan an excursion in Juneau but planned to do some shopping and eat. We sampled more Alaskan beer, salmon, and halibut at the Twisted Fish Company. The best store for shopping was the Alaska Shirt Company where we found authentic Alaskan chocolate and Alaska T-shirt + Hat deals. Be sure to look at items to see if it is made in Alaska. We saw many “Alaskan Chocolate’ bars that were made somewhere else! Our relatives took a helicopter to the Mendenhall Glacier and said it was fabulous (that was above our price range though!). We signed up to do the North Star Experience while in Juneau (see the picture above of the view).
For those interested in wildlife, a whale-watching tour is a must. Juneau’s waters are teeming with marine life, including humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and more. Several operators offer guided boat tours that provide opportunities to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Additionally, visitors can explore the Alaska State Museum, which offers rich insights into the state’s cultural and natural history, providing a well-rounded experience of Juneau’s unique heritage and natural splendor.
Victoria, BC Cruise Port
Victoria, BC, is a charming and vibrant port city that offers a plethora of activities for visitors arriving by cruise. Known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and unique attractions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
We stopped in Victoria late in the afternoon and did not have much time to explore so we walked from the cruise ship to a nearby trail (Dallas Road Waterfront Trail) which had beautiful views along the Canadian coast. We stopped at Mile Zero Monument and walked down to Steve Fonyo Beach with driftwood and smooth stones. The water was warm enough to go swimming and I wish we had packed our swimsuits and a towel from the ship!
If you have more time at the Victoria, BC port….first and foremost, a visit to the iconic Butchart Gardens is a must. This National Historic Site of Canada boasts 55 acres of beautifully manicured gardens, each with its own distinct theme, such as the Sunken Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Rose Garden. The explosion of colors and fragrances provides a serene escape and a perfect photo opportunity. Additionally, the gardens offer seasonal events and evening illumination during the summer, making it a delightful experience any time of the year.
For those interested in history and culture, the Royal BC Museum is an excellent stop. Located near the Inner Harbour, this museum offers fascinating exhibits on natural and human history, including the indigenous cultures of British Columbia. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel, where you can indulge in afternoon tea and soak in the grandeur of this architectural gem.
Finally, no visit to Victoria would be complete without exploring the city’s picturesque Inner Harbour. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, take in the sights of the Parliament Buildings, or hop on a whale-watching tour to witness the majestic marine life of the Pacific Northwest. Alternatively, rent a kayak or take a guided tour to experience the harbor from the water. With its blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and diverse activities, Victoria, BC, offers an unforgettable experience for cruise passengers.
Disembarking in Seattle
As mentioned above in the section with things to do in Seattle, we disembarked the ship around 9 am and our flight wasn’t until 9 pm so we had extra time to visit Bainbridge Island before heading home. We took an Uber from the port to the hotel we stayed at a week earlier and they held our carry-on bags so we could explore the city with fewer items to carry. Royal Caribbean has a luggage valet service and we had our checked suitcases sent directly to the airport so we only had our carry-on bags to worry about. I highly recommend using the luggage valet service if you are flying after your cruise!
We walked to Pike Place and the waterfront to catch the ferry over to Bainbridge and had lunch. Then we took the ferry back to Seattle, walked back to the hotel (about a 30-minute walk), grabbed our luggage, and took an Uber to the airport. We walked so much around Seattle on that last day that we had 25,000 steps logged! We were all exhausted and jet-lagged the next day!
Royal Caribbean Cruise Tips
To make the most of your cruise, a bit of planning and insider knowledge can go a long way. Here are some tips to enhance your Royal Caribbean experience.
First and foremost, take advantage of the online check-in process. Completing this before you arrive at the port can save you significant time and streamline your boarding experience. Additionally, download the Royal Caribbean app, which provides a wealth of information at your fingertips, including daily schedules, deck maps, and the ability to make dining and activity reservations. I recommend downloading the Royal Caribbean app AS SOON AS YOU BOOK YOUR CRUISE! Once you have your cruise booked and log into the app, you can start booking excursions. The excursions to Alaska sell out fast!
While the main dining room and buffet offer excellent choices, your ship might have smaller restaurant counters and cafes that can be a highlight of your trip. Also, don’t miss out on the shows and entertainment options available on board. From Broadway-style productions to ice-skating shows and comedy acts, there’s something for everyone. Booking your preferred shows early through the app is advisable, as seats can fill up quickly!
Finally, take some time to explore the ports of call. Royal Caribbean offers a variety of shore excursions tailored to different interests, from adventure tours to cultural experiences. Research and book these excursions early to ensure you get the ones that appeal most to you.
Take advantage of the Luggage Valet program if you are flying to your cruise ship. Your stateroom attendant will leave information about the luggage valet program if you qualify. Keep in mind that you need to fill out 1 form per stateroom for the luggage valet. If you have adjoining rooms (like we did), you need to fill out 2 forms (1 per room).
On the disembarking day, we wait until the very last-minute to leave the ship. You will be assigned to wait in a designated area but you can wait anywhere (until you get kicked out lol). We like to wait until around 8:30/9am to disembark, that way, you avoid the crowds and lines.
