Why a Sunday Cleaning Routine Helps Busy Moms
Instead of random chores here and there or weekend marathon cleaning sessions, this weekly Sunday reset gives you:
✔️ A calmer home
✔️ Less clutter, more clarity
✔️ A smoother Monday + week ahead
✔️ Cleaning that feels manageable (not overwhelming)
Why I Do a Sunday Reset (Instead of Daily Deep Cleaning)
I used to try to “keep up” during the week—and it never worked. Between work, kids, meals, and life, daily perfection just isn’t realistic.
Instead, I focus on one intentional reset day so the rest of the week feels lighter.
Sunday cleaning is about:
- Clearing visual clutter
- Catching up on laundry
- Resetting the kitchen
- Preparing for the week ahead
Think of it as setting the stage—not scrubbing the floors.
Your Step-by-Step Sunday Cleaning Routine
Here’s how to reset your whole home in about 1.5–2 hours — with realistic expectations and simplicity built right in.
1. Start With a Quick Walk-Through (10 Minutes)
Before I clean anything, I walk through the house with a laundry basket.
I pick up:
- Random clutter
- Toys
- Shoes
- Papers
- Anything that doesn’t belong
This one step alone makes the house feel instantly calmer.
👉 Tip: Don’t put things away yet—just collect.
2. Reset the Kitchen (20–30 Minutes)
The kitchen is the heart of the house—and the biggest stress trigger.
My Sunday kitchen reset includes:
- Emptying the dishwasher
- Reloading + running it
- Wiping counters
- Clearing the sink
- Tossing old food from the fridge
I’m not deep cleaning.
I just want a clean slate for Monday morning.
3. Laundry Catch-Up (While Everything Else Happens)
Sunday is laundry day—but not in an overwhelming way.
- Wash all remaining loads
- Fold while watching TV or listening to a podcast
- Put everything away before bedtime
- Starting Monday with empty hampers feels like winning the week before it starts.
4. Bathroom Quick Clean (15 Minutes Each)
This is a maintenance clean, not a scrub-everything situation.
- Quick wipe of sinks and counters
- Swap out hand towels
- Empty trash
- Light toilet clean
That’s it.
Clean enough to feel fresh—without burning out.
5. Floors: Only What’s Needed
I don’t mop the whole house every Sunday.
Instead:
- Vacuum high-traffic areas
- Spot clean if needed
- Save deep cleaning for another day
Progress > perfection.
6. Prep for the Week Ahead (The Secret Sauce)
This is what makes the routine work.
I take 15–20 minutes to:
- Check the calendar
- Set out clothes for Monday
- Prep backpacks or bags
- Plan meals (even loosely)
This step turns cleaning into peace of mind.
How Long This Actually Takes
Most Sundays, this routine takes 1.5–2 hours total.
Not all at once.
Not stressful.
Often with music, coffee, or a show on in the background.
And the payoff?
A calm Monday morning—and a smoother week.
What I Don’t Do on Sundays
Let’s normalize this:
- ❌ No baseboards
- ❌ No closet organizing
- ❌ No full-house deep clean
Sunday is for resetting, not exhausting yourself.
My Best Tips for Sticking With a Sunday Cleaning Routine
- Do it at the same time every week
- Keep supplies simple and accessible
- Let it be “good enough”
- Remember: future-you will thank you
You’re not failing if your house isn’t perfect.
You’re winning if your week feels easier.
