Free Elf Printables
Each year we struggle to come up with ideas for our Elf until I designed an Elf costume for our elf. I wanted to create some Elf on a shelf clothes and Elf ideas other than mischief so I made these Elf superhero costumes. Download the Elf Shelf printables PDF below to make these Free Printable Elf Superhero Costumes!
What is the deal with Elf on the Shelf?
We were sucked into the Christmas Elf tradition in 2012. Our Elf came from a local store with a storybook about the Elf on the Shelf tradition. The story explains that a special scout elf is sent to your home from Santa’s workshop in the North Pole. The elf watches the children all day and reports back to Santa each night. The Elf tradition is cute and magical and encourages kids to tp to behave.
Children are not allowed to touch the elf or the magic will be lost.
Can the parents touch the Elf on the Shelf?
We don’t touch our elf, but if we need to move him for some reason, we use a pair on kitchen tongs!
We love it when our elf, Kristopher, returns every year. Our elf rarely practices “naughty” tricks but he does make us laugh. If you have a Christmas elf, you may have noticed all the Elf ideas on the internet and that’s why I came up with these printable costumes for any Christmas Elf.
When should Elf on Shelf Arrive?
Our elf arrives the day after Thanksgiving. That gives him plenty of time to visit and do fun things each night until Christmas Day. Our elf leaves a special “welcome back” letter when he arrives and leaves a “goodbye” letter and small gifts for the children when he leaves.
Elf on the Shelf Ideas
There are tons of Elf on the Shelf Ideas on Pinterest and Google search, however, I created a handy Calendar with plenty of ideas! Include props and pre-written letters and your elf will have a full schedule of fun things to do while he visits!
Elf Superhero Costumes
These Elf Superhero costumes fit most Barbie dolls too! The Elf masks and capes are a bit bigger than most Barbies, so I included smaller masks in the PDF if you are printing these for Barbie too. An idea that we plan to do is have a few barbies and the elf hanging out like a superhero get-together, lol.
My kids love superheroes and although they have their favorite superhero, they will enjoy seeing the elf dressed as all of them 🙂
Best of all, you can store these flat in an envelope or plastic sleeve for next year so you are not adding more stuff to your home.

How to Make Elf Costumes
Supplies:
- Free Printable (get it below)
- Lightweight White Card Stock
- Small Scissors
- Hole Puncher (optional)
- Scotch Tape
Instructions:
- Print the free printable file on lightweight cardstock (if you print on printer paper the costumes will not be durable).
- Use small scissors to cut each one. Small scissors will be easier than a larger pair. It took me around 20 minutes to cut everything out by hand.
- Use a hole puncher to punch the eyes. This step is optional but I liked seeing the elf’s eyes through the mask. The only mask I did not punch was Iron Man.
- Place the costumes in an envelope or plastic sleeve protector until ready for use.
- Use tape to attach to your Elf or Barbie doll.
Here is an idea of the Elf Printables included in the Fre PDF:
Here are a few pictures of our Elf modeling the costumes.
Also, our elf’s hat came off halfway through his photoshoot so if that happens to yours or you want to take the hat off for some of the costumes, just know that you can always glue it back on.
Batman is my son’s favorite superhero and my daughter loves female superheroes so I made a Bat Girl too.
I made the Captain America mask and felt something was missing so I added a printable shield too!
My son dressed up like Hulk this past Halloween and is going to love our Elf as Hulk.
My son was Spider-Man for Halloween when he was 1 year old and still loves him.
Then there’s Iron Man – I included the chest plate in the free printable!
Here’s Wolverine. I know this is a mixture of X-Men, Justice League, and The Avengers… but there’s something for everyone with this free printable Christmas Elf PDF.
Here are a few pics of my daughter’s Barbies and our Christmas Elf, Kristopher hanging out on a Christmas wreath. Once you have all of the masks and capes cut, place them in an envelope for next year so you don’t need to cut them every year.
With these free printable costumes, your elf can have a superhero party with other Elves or Barbie dolls!
If you are still thinking about doing this, just do it, you know your kids are gonna love it (and so will you)!
These Christmas Elf free printables will help you create countless Elf ideas for the holidays. These Elf superhero costumes are fun for adult humor too, but your kids will love the Elf dressed up the most.
Does the Elf on the Shelf move every night?
Yes, your elf should move every night. If your elf doesn’t move, there is probably a good reason (mom & dad forgot, lol). Grab this printable Elf calendar so you never forget to move your Elf. I also recommend setting an alarm on your phone each night to remond you, but the calander and props in this printable pack will help you plan your Elf adventures!
