Dollar Tree Rug Underlay DIY

If you love the look of woven cane furniture and decor from stores like Serena & Lily, Pottery Barn, and Studio McGee — but not the price tags — you are going to love this.

I recently discovered that a simple $1.50 Dollar Tree rug underlay can be transformed into beautiful faux cane webbing with just a little creativity and paint. And once I started experimenting… I couldn’t stop.

Before I knew it, I had created seven different high-end decor pieces — all using the same affordable material.

In this post, I’m sharing exactly how I made each project, what inspired them, and how you can recreate them in your own home.

Let’s turn budget into boutique. 💛

What is faux cane decor?

Faux cane decor imitates woven rattan using affordable materials like rug underlay.

Does rug underlay hold up?

Yes, when sealed properly, it lasts for years.

Can I use this in kitchens and bathrooms?

Yes — just seal well.

Is this beginner-friendly?

Absolutely. These projects require minimal tools.

SUPPLIES USED

Most projects use:

    • Wood edging trim
    • Dollar Tree rug underlay
    • Hot glue gun
    • Mod Podge or clear sealer
    • Khaki spray paint
    • Camel acrylic paint
    • Sponge brushes (easier to apply mod podge)
    • Sponge paint roller (easier to apply paint)
    • Foam board or wood bases

DIY #1: “Hey You” Door Sign / Wall Hanging

Inspiration: Serena & Lily entryway decor + modern boho signs

Why I Made It

I wanted something welcoming but modern — not the typical “Welcome” sign. Short phrases like “Hey You” feel friendlier and more boutique.

Dollar Tree DIYs That Look Like Cane Decor

Quick Tutorial

  1. Cut rug underlay to fit wood round
  2. Paint if desired (use mod podge first)
  3. Glue rug underlay to the wood round
  4. Add wood trim for framing
  5. Attach letters
  6. Add ribbon hanger + greenery

Style Tip

Paint letters soft cream for a tone-on-tone look.

DIY #3: Glass Cabinet Door Inserts

Inspiration: Cane-front cabinets from Serena & Lily

Cane cabinets are everywhere right now — but they’re expensive. This gives the same look for under $10.

DIY #7: Beveled Mirror Faux Cane Upgrade

PAINTING & FINISHING TIPS

For best results:

✔️ Seal first
✔️ Use light spray coats
✔️ Don’t oversaturate
✔️ Let dry fully
✔️ Finish with matte sealer

This keeps the texture realistic.

💡 WHY I LOVE THIS TECHNIQUE

What I love most about this Dollar Tree hack is that:

  • It’s affordable
  • It’s customizable
  • It’s beginner-friendly
  • It works in every room
  • It looks expensive

It lets you create a cohesive, designer-inspired home — without designer prices.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This series reminded me that you don’t need expensive supplies to create a beautiful home.

With a little creativity, patience, and a $1.50 rug mat, you can build decor that looks like it came straight from a boutique.

If you try any of these projects, I’d love to see them — tag me or share your version!

Happy crafting,
Melanie 💛
