Embracing Minimalism in a Teen’s Bedroom
Our son is a minimalist. Don’t ask me how hegot that way but it makes me happy that he is happy with minimal items. Minimalism is not only trendy but also functional, particularly in a teen’s bedroom where clutter can quickly accumulate. The key to a minimalist design is focusing on simplicity, functionality, and a neutral color palette.
Here are some steps to get started:
Declutter and Organize
- Sort Through Belongings: Begin by sorting through old toys, clothes, and furniture. Donate or store items that are no longer needed or used.
- Hidden Storage Solutions: Utilize under-bed storage bins and multi-functional furniture with built-in storage, like an ottoman or a nightstand with drawers. I found these under the bed plastic bins and use several to organize things under his bed.
Choose a Neutral Color Palette
A neutral color palette creates a calm and sophisticated atmosphere. Consider shades of gray, navy, or white as the base color for the walls and larger furniture pieces. These colors are timeless and can easily be accented with bolder hues through decor and accessories.
The paint color in his bedroom is Benjamin Moore Gray. We started with an accent wall in his room then ended up painting the entire room (minus the closet wall). He loves the dark gray aesthetic.
Simplify the Decor
Select a few statement pieces that reflect your teen’s personality and interests. This could include:
- A large wall mural or decal featuring their favorite video game character.
- Framed artwork or posters that can be easily swapped out as tastes change.
- A sleek wall clock or minimalistic shelving for displaying collectibles.
We found the Peace Frog wall art at Home Goods. The mirror is a thrift store find that I updated with Dollar Tree popsicle sticks. He has picture frame shelves on the wall by the door and decided NOT to hang curtains to keep it minimal. We decided not to hang anything in the desk nook in the closet but instead use the shelf for colorful books and an LED strip for the gaming aesthetic.
How can I make my boy’s bedroom look cool?
For many teens, gaming is a beloved hobby that can be showcased in their bedroom design. Here’s how to create a functional and stylish gaming space:
The Gaming Setup
- Ergonomic Furniture: Invest in a comfortable gaming chair that provides support during long gaming sessions. Look for a chair with adjustable settings for maximum comfort. We had a side chair from Ikea that he uses for his gaming chair and surprisingly, it’s quite comfortable!
- Gaming Desk: Choose a desk that offers ample space for a monitor, keyboard, and gaming console. Consider a desk with cable management features to keep cords tidy and out of sight. We placed his desk inside his closet after removing the doors and his room feels so much bigger!
Ambient Lighting
Lighting is crucial in setting the mood of a gamer’s room. Incorporate LED strip lights around the desk or behind the monitor to add a dynamic and customizable lighting effect. Smart bulbs with adjustable colors and brightness can also enhance the gaming experience.
Office in a Closet
You might be wondering where does he hang his clothes? He is minimalist and only has 10 items that need to be hung so we found a spot in our master bedroom walk-in closet to hang his clothes. The rest is folded in his dresser. I left the closet shelf with the hooks to hang clothes so it’s easy to turn it back to a closet later but I added a piece of wood on top of the metal shelf so the books don’t fall through.
I added a strip of faux brick wall paneling in his closet to make it look more industrial. We had this fake brick leftover from our Shed interior update.
Finding the Perfect Platform Bed
A platform bed is an excellent choice for a minimalist bedroom. Its sleek design and low profile fit well with the modern aesthetic. Here’s how to find a great deal:
Shop Smart
Online Marketplaces: Websites like Wayfair, Amazon, and Overstock frequently offer discounts on furniture, including platform beds. WE FOUND HIS PLATFORM BED AT WAYFAIR HERE.
