Dollar Tree Rug Underlay DIY
If you love the look of woven cane furniture and decor from stores like Serena & Lily, Pottery Barn, and Studio McGee — but not the price tags — you are going to love this.
I recently discovered that a simple $1.50 Dollar Tree rug underlay can be transformed into beautiful faux cane webbing with just a little creativity and paint. And once I started experimenting… I couldn’t stop.
Before I knew it, I had created seven different high-end decor pieces — all using the same affordable material.
In this post, I’m sharing exactly how I made each project, what inspired them, and how you can recreate them in your own home.
Let’s turn budget into boutique. 💛

SUPPLIES USED
Most projects use:
-
- Wood edging trim
- Dollar Tree rug underlay
- Hot glue gun
- Mod Podge or clear sealer
- Khaki spray paint
- Camel acrylic paint
- Sponge brushes (easier to apply mod podge)
- Sponge paint roller (easier to apply paint)
- Foam board or wood bases
DIY #1: “Hey You” Door Sign / Wall Hanging
Inspiration: Serena & Lily entryway decor + modern boho signs
Why I Made It
I wanted something welcoming but modern — not the typical “Welcome” sign. Short phrases like “Hey You” feel friendlier and more boutique.
Quick Tutorial
- Cut rug underlay to fit wood round
- Paint if desired (use mod podge first)
- Glue rug underlay to the wood round
- Add wood trim for framing
- Attach letters
- Add ribbon hanger + greenery
Style Tip
Paint letters soft cream for a tone-on-tone look.
DIY #2: Gold Charger Plates with Faux Cane Centers
Inspiration: Pottery Barn tablescapes + coastal dining rooms
Why I Made It
I wanted elevated table decor for holidays and hosting without spending $20 per charger.
Quick Tutorial
- Cut circle from underlay
- Glue into charger center
- Seal with Mod Podge
- Let dry overnight
Use Them For:
- Tablescapes
- Shelf decor
- Plate stands
- Wall displays
DIY #3: Glass Cabinet Door Inserts
Inspiration: Cane-front cabinets from Serena & Lily
Why I Made It
Cane cabinets are everywhere right now — but they’re expensive. This gives the same look for under $10.
Quick Tutorial
- Cut underlay and foam board to size
- Paint if desired (use mod podge first)
- Secure inside door frame
Result
Instant custom furniture look.
DIY #4: Mason Jar Faux Cane Wrap (Candle / Vase)
Inspiration: Coastal candle holders + boho vases
Why I Made It
I love using mason jars, but wanted them to look more styled and less “crafty.”
Quick Tutorial
- Cut underlay strip
- Paint if desired (use mod podge first)
- Wrap around jar
- Glue seam in back
- Seal
Uses
- Candle holder
- Vase
- Bathroom storage
- Desk decor
DIY #5: Wood Picture Frame Upgrade with Quote
Inspiration: Studio McGee gallery walls
Why I Made It
Plain frames can look flat. Adding texture makes them feel custom. Want the FREE Printable? Join Craft & Create Club here.

DIY #6: Dollar Tree Locker Bin Makeover
Inspiration: Pottery Barn storage bins
Why I Made It
I wanted pretty storage that didn’t look like plastic.
Quick Tutorial
- Measure bin panels
- Cut underlay
- Paint if desired (use mod podge first)
- Glue to sides
- Add wood plaque label
- Seal
Great For:
- Craft rooms
- Pantries
- Closets
- Bathrooms
DIY #7: Beveled Mirror Faux Cane Upgrade
Inspiration: Coastal mirrors + boutique entryways
Why I Made It
This was my favorite transformation — it completely changed the mirror. Grab the beveled mirrors here (they come in gold too!)
Quick Tutorial
- Cut underlay to shape
- Paint if desired (use mod podge first)
- Glue inside frame
Result
Looks like a $25 mirror.
PAINTING & FINISHING TIPS
For best results:
✔️ Seal first
