One of our family traditions to start Christmas decorating the day after Thanksgiving so we decorated the entire house (inside and out) last week.   I probably went through 10 boxes of Christmas decorations and decided to try some DIY table-top Christmas trees using scrap paper – even though we really didn’t need more decorations, lol!

Don't buy Christmas decorations when you can make them. Try these DIY Table-Top Christmas Trees Using Scrap Paper for a frugal way to decorate!

Supplies:

  • Styrofoam tree shapes or chipboard shaped like a cone
  • Scrap paper in your color choice
  • Scissors
  • Modge Podge
  • Tape

I purchased some styrofoam tree shapes over a year ago and they have been sitting in my to-do craft bin since – which is the main reason for making these trees. Otherwise, I would’ve used a large piece of chipboard or cardboard and shaped into a cone.

I went through my scrap paper bin (I keep any paper that is salvageable and recycle the rest) and decided to keep the trees neutral with white, cream, brown. For the tall tree, I wanted to have the paper resemble wood planks, so I just cut rectangle shapes.

For the small tree I just cut a tear-drop shape. I wrapped the cones with craft wrapping paper to give it some stability when I glued the pieces on.  Then I started pasting. I started at the bottom and worked my way up.  I used modge podge for my tree.  That stuff is really messy but it works!  I layered the pieces dark at the bottom and light to the top.

I folded one scrap piece over the top and glued a few more around it to finish it off.

These DIY table-top Christmas trees were easy to make and re-purposed materials that may have otherwise been tossed out!
